Drive dimensioningDimensioningHow the operating modeaffects rated dataThe operating mode is important when selecting a motor. For example, the temperature rise on a motor subject toshort-term load will be lower than that on a motor subjectto long-term load. Operating modes S1 to S8 have beendefined in accordance with EN 60034.Continuous operation S1The operating time at rated power is long enough for themachine to reach steady-state temperature. The motoroperates continuously at rated power.Short-term operation S2In comparison with the subsequent pause, the operatingtime is too short for the machine to reach steady-statetemperature. During the subsequent lengthy pause, themotor cools down to the initial temperature.Intermittent operation S3. S4. S5Cycles of the same type combine to form a sequence. Thecycle time is usually 10 minutes.˘ S3: The start-up current is not significant for the temperaturerise of the motor.˘ S4: The start-up current contributes to the temperaturerise of the motor.˘ S5: The start-up current and braking current contributeto the temperature rise of the motor.Continuous operation with intermittent loading S6The motor continues to be ventilated during the no-loadphases, enabling it to cool down.Uninterrupted operation with acceleration and braking S7The motor runs almost without pauses.Uninterrupted operation S8 with pole-changingThe machine runs constantly under load but with frequentspeed variation.2G-motion motec en 11/20042-3
