SHARING KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
Developing local skills through training
Air France has co-founded three associations – Airemploi,
JEREMY and AFMAé – to contribute to the development of
local skills.
- Airemploi informs people about career openings and training
courses in the air transport and aeronautical sectors. In
2009, it held 255 conferences in middle- and high-schools
and provided information to nearly 6,700 people.
- JEREMY (JEunes en Recherche d’EMploi à Roissy et OrlY),
promotes the employment of unskilled school-leavers around
Roissy-CDG and Orly airports. In 2009, 266 young people
attended training courses for airport jobs, among them
129 did internships at Air France. 62% of the trainees were
already hired. This year, a specific course has been set up in
partnership with Servair for a group of disabled jobseekers.
- AFMAé (Association pour la Formation aux Métiers de
l’Aérien) trains 388 young people at its ‘Apprentice Training
Center’ (CFA) in 2009-10, among them 149 at Air France
Industries despite the airline’s freeze on hiring. Ultimately,
61% of the trainees from 2008-09 were employed the year
after.
Several KLM departments work with young people in the
external community, running professional training and CSR
awareness programs. A few examples:
- Supporting the funding and organization of apprenticeships
with Regional Education Centers (ROC) for ground handling
procedures and aviation maintenance.
- Design Challenge for 20 aerospace students with Delft
University.
- The AIESEC Ambassador program, an international platform
for students to explore and develop their leadership potential
in the field of CSR.
- JINC (Youngsters in Companies), a regional institution that
prepares high school students for future work, avoiding early
drop out.
To help develop the sheltered sector, Air France
asked ANRH*, an association that helps handicapped
people find work, to create an activity to wash and
repackage passenger blankets from Roissy-CDG. In
2009, a launderette employing 25 disabled people
was built close to the airport in Tremblay-en-France,
able to handle 15,000 to 30,000 blankets per day. The
initiative is expected to generate around 10 extra jobs
in the near future.
Beyond the creation of jobs tailored to each handicap,
the laundry equipment and procedures were designed
to respect the environment by saving water and
energy. Air France works also in partnership with
ANRH to improve social and professional support for
handicapped employees.
FOCUS ON… FOCUS ON…
WORKING WITH THE SHELTERED SECTOR
TO CREATE A NEW ACTIVITY
Working with companies in the sheltered sector
The Group actively supports companies that employ staff who
are handicapped or marginalized. It works with the sheltered
sector in fields as varied as the distribution of uniforms, cabin
blanket dry cleaning, and engine spares logistics.
In 2009, Air France worked with 55 organizations in the
sheltered sector in the regions around Roissy, Orly and
Toulouse, for a total of €11 million and 485 full time jobs (see
Focus on...). The airline also allocated part of its vocational
education tax, some €772,000, to organizations that train
handicapped people.
KLM regularly employs young people from Global Start. This
organization based in Amsterdam works with young people
who are socially marginalized or have no qualifications,
giving professional training in Information and Communication
Technologies.
TECHNICAL EDUCATION CENTER KENYA
KLM Group and Kenya Airways are set to launch a
repair center project to train aircraft maintenance
and repair workers in Kenya. Funded with €40,000
raised entirely from an auction at KLM Engineering
& Maintenance, the project will be linked to the KLM
AirCares program to raise awareness and boost
passenger miles donations; this in turn helps to cut
travel expenses and reinvest freed-up money.
The center is needed because maintenance and
repairs in Kenya have quality and customer service
issues due to a lack of adequate processes, structures,
knowledge, skills and equipment; available equipment
is mostly second hand and there is no local repair
expertise.
The project brings long-term opportunities for people
to improve their incomes and living conditions.
