Glasscockfamily bittenby the bugIT took only two dogs for ShannonGlasscock <strong>and</strong> his family to be bitten, <strong>and</strong>bitten hard, by the greyhound racingbug.Shannon is 27, has a young family,<strong>and</strong> those two dogs, the littermatesUnpainted Angel <strong>and</strong> Gowrie King, havealready tempted him into looking for aproperty on which to breed, rear <strong>and</strong>train his team.Shannon, his wife Paula <strong>and</strong> theirchildren Bailey <strong>and</strong> Blake, live atKingsthorpe just a few minutes outsideToowoomba on the road to Oakey.His dad Rod lives just two minutesaway. The pair is a committed greyhoundracing team ... all the family is.“We went looking to get into racing<strong>and</strong> thought we would like to have somehorses,” Shannon told The Journal.But it didn’t take the Glasscockfamily long to realize horses were far tooexpensive.By chance, Rod Glasscock happenedto deliver sawdust to John Collins atPostman’s Ridge greyhound complex.It was through this connection thatShannon <strong>and</strong> Rod met Richie Wisener.They ended up <strong>with</strong> two pups from aYo Yo’s Boy-With Attitude litter.But it hasn’t all been plain sailing forthe Glasscocks.While Unpainted Angel has won sixraces including two at Albion Park, shehurt a hock at headquarters in May <strong>and</strong>has been sidelined since.But Gowrie King broke his <strong>and</strong> was offthe track for 10 months.When the dog won his maiden atCapalaba early in July, it was an excitedShannon <strong>and</strong> Rod who celebrated thevictory.“It was very exciting to get him backto racing <strong>and</strong> win a race,” said Shannon.“The hock was broken pretty badly <strong>and</strong>Larry Jocumsen doubted we would get himback to the track.”One try failed, but on a second attempt,Gowrie King has won <strong>and</strong> been placedseveral times.Shannon <strong>and</strong> Rod Glasscock<strong>with</strong> Gowrie King ... a winnerafter 10 months out <strong>with</strong> abroken hock.Unpainted Angel will be theGlasscock foundation broodbitch.A Coles Supermarket employee inToowoomba, Shannon is so hooked ongreyhound racing he <strong>and</strong> Paula havesold their home at Kingsthorpe <strong>and</strong> arelooking at buying a greyhound complexin the Lowood area.“Unpainted Angel has won two atAlbion Park on a Monday night <strong>and</strong> fourat Ipswich,” he said.“There is a great chance we will gether back racing, but she has earned theright to be a broodbitch already.”Shannon <strong>and</strong> his dad have JohnCollins, Gary Moore <strong>and</strong> Richie Wisenerto thank for all the help they havereceived in the learning curve that isgreyhound training.“We’ve already bought another pup,this one by Excite Ability, <strong>and</strong> the wholefamily loves the dogs <strong>and</strong> can’t wait toget out onto a property to rear <strong>and</strong>train,” said Shannon.He also has been given a broodbitch,a daughter of Black Shiraz called DrCassie a winner at Canberra for theDoctors Kennels.Shannon <strong>and</strong> his dad have beenstudying hard in the short time they havebeen in the industry.
