2O1 O president'smessageMike Cox, AIAChinese proverbs notwithstanding, in 2O1O AIA North Carolina did what it could to prepare for a better future. Like our membersacross the state, we did not lack for challenges in 2OlO.The dramatic economic downturn and cutbacks that took place at the end of 2OO8 and the beginning of 2OO9 did not showup in reduced membership until 2010. lt wasn't as bad as we anticipated. The budget for 2O1O was 90% of the 2OO9 budget, including cutbacks in operating expenses, staff and programs. lt worked.Despite extraordinary obstacles, the chapter quietly succeeded on several fronts. Section leadership for all seven sections acrossthe state launched an unprecedented effort to reach out to a distressed membership. Kathie Rainey (Membership Services)worked wlth individual members and section leaders to make it possible in many cases for distressed members to retain theirAIA membershio.Advocacy efforts at the state and national level for construction jobs were very aggressive in 2O10. Success was modest ina political arena that continued to face its own difficulties, but the interests of architects and the construction industry wereadvanced and they will be revisited in 2011.Rewriting board policies was among the housekeeping efforts that made way for more serious change, like the completereorganization and separation of the NorthCarolina Architectural Foundation, just one of the steps required as part of the creation of the North Carolina Center forArchitecture and Deslgn,Meanwhile, AIA Triangle was recognized at Grassroots for their membership effort and jn Miami, a record seven new memberswere inducted as Fellows in 2o1O. Back in North Carolina, the chapter held a memorable Design Conference in Asheville, highlighted by the moonlight awards ceremony on the grounds of the Biltmore Estate. For most of the year, the realization of the Center for Architecture remained as elusive as ever it had been during the past sixyears. with time running out,25 members stepped up to close the gap in financing, the AIA tower sold to a responsible ownerand Notice to Proceed was given in November for construction of the North Carolina Center for Architecture and Design. Wewill move into our new home in 2011.It was a challenging year, but it made the small successes all the more gratifying. Thank you all for your help in moving ourassociation, our profession and our members a lit e closer to the start of a great decade.ft'{Mike Cox. AIA
