ARGUMENT VIII“The Lord Stressed Fellowship, Not Separation”The Argument Advanced by Dr. FermThe eighth New Evangelical contention is made as follows:Mr. Frank Colquhoun, of the Evangelical Alliance inLondon, after a careful study of separation and fellowship in theNew Testament, has concluded that “the Bible lays moreemphasis upon fellowship than upon mere negative separation.”This being the case, it is safer, as a rule, to seek to cooperateunless cooperation affords no open door. Therefore themissionary or evangelist takes no risk in practicing a cooperativepolicy. 1An Examination of Dr. Ferm’s ConclusionsIn a way very similar to that discussed in Argument Seven, wherepreaching against hypocrisy in general was made the antithesis ofpreaching against doctrinal error when actually both have their properplace, here practicing fellowship and practicing separation have beenmade antithetical actions. On the basis of this choice between the two,Dr. Ferm states that he agrees that fellowship is the practice stressed inthe New Testament, and that therefore this is “safer, as a rule.” Hefurther concludes on the basis of fellowship being stressed more thanseparation, that, “The missionary or evangelist takes no risk inpracticing a cooperative policy.” 2Dr. Ferm’s conclusion here, which is exhibited in his coinage of an“It is safer . . . to seek to cooperate” 3 rule of thumb, displays the factthat the conclusions on the matter of ecclesiastical separation which he72
advocates are not delineated by a careful stipulation of the biblicalconditions of fellowship and of separation, but are based on a blanketconviction that “What the Bible emphasizes ought to be followed.” Thistruism like any truism can be eloquently and loudly defended, but unlessit is acted upon with the stabilizing reservation that it is to be followedonly under the circumstances under which God intended it to befollowed, its good emphasis when misapplied only results in much eviland confusion. The Writer’s CritiqueAgain, as before, it is necessary to orientate this proposition withthe aim of Dr. Ferm’s book, which is to present a defense and rationalefor the neo-evangelical position of inclusivism which in evangelismplaces together conservatives and liberals on the same platform. In thisproposition this policy is defended on the grounds that the NewTestament stresses fellowship more than it stresses separation, andtherefore “it is safer, as a rule, to seek to cooperate unless cooperationaffords no open door.” 4It first must be observed that the New Testament commands quitestrongly that true Christians ought to especially love one another just asChrist has loved them (John 13:34,35). However, it also must be notedthat the New Testament also speaks of the duty of a Christian to avoidthose “which cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine”(Rom. 16:17), to reject heretics (Titus 3:10), to beware of false prophets(Matt. 3:10), to receive not one who proclaims a doctrine which is notthe doctrine of Christ (2 John 10,11), to “let him be accursed” whobrings another gospel (Gal. 1:8,9), to not be unequally yoked withunbelievers, to touch them not, and to come out from among them (2Cor. 6:14-7:1). In addition to this, there is the example of the Lord inMatt. 23 calling the Pharisees “Children of hell” (v. 15), “Hypocrites”(vv. 13,15,23,25,27, and 29), “Fools and blind” (v. 19), “Full ofextortion and excess” (v. 25), “Full of dead bones, and of uncleanliness(v. 27), “Full of hypocrisy and iniquity” (v. 28), “Serpents,” “Generationof vipers” (v. 33), ones heading for the damnation of hell (v. 33), “Blindguides” (v. 24), and “Children of them which killed the prophets” (v.31).73
