India Innovation Initiative –i3 Regional FairsWith the mission of harnessing innovations for wealthgeneration and societal benefit, the regional fairs showcasedinnovations in various technology domains18 TO 81 YEARS – there is no agebar for Innovations. This was amplyproved by the 186 innovationsshort-listed at the i3 regional fairsin Mumbai, Durgapur, and Chennai,organised by <strong>CII</strong>, the Departmentof Science and Technology (DST)and Agilent Technologies under theIndia Innovation Initiative – i3 <strong>2010</strong>Campaign.Addressing the need to create aninnovation ecosystem in the country,the India Innovation Initiative -i3 waslaunched as a nation-wide innovationcompetition for innovators above 18years, in April 2009, to sensitize,encourage and promote innovators,and facilitate the commercializationof innovations.At the regional fairs, high profilejury members from banking, CSIRinstitutes and industry scrutinisedall the contributions to shortlist thebest innovations, based on theirtechnical feasibility, market potentialand impact on industry, society andthe environment, to compete withselected innovations from otherregions for the i3 National Fair.Around 890 projects were receivedin all from across the country, inthe broad categories of (Mechanical/Automobile etc).The focus areas were Water,Transportation, Energy,Environment, Healthcare, Agro/Food, Assistive Technology,Infrastructure, Internal SecurityApplications, Education andSpace.i3 not only recognizes the bestinnovations but also assiststhe innovators with incubationsupport, making business plansand help them commercialize theirtechnologies with the support of itsknowledge partners: Young Indians(Yi), the Center for Innovation,Incubation and Entrepreneurship(<strong>CII</strong>E), the Society for Innovationand Entrepreneurship (SINE) ofIIT Bombay, and the e-Cell ofIIT Bombay. <strong>CII</strong>’s TechnologyDevelopment and PromotionCentres in Andhra Pradesh andTamil Nadu (APTDC and TNTDPC)carried out the initial level screeningof the projects. Additionally, SINEand the e-Cell of IIT Bombay willprovide mentoring services to theawardees at the national level. SINEis one of the largest incubators inIndia and been adjudged the bestincubator for 2009.Around 50 innovations in varioustechnology domains were48 | <strong>October</strong> <strong>2010</strong> Communiqué
