Operating <strong>and</strong> Financial Review – continuedFuture Developments continuedResearch Excellence Framework (REF)Following the success <strong>of</strong> RAE2008 ,the GSA is continuing to develop the strategies, infrastructure <strong>and</strong> capabilities that reflect ourposition as a leading research institution in our disciplines <strong>and</strong> prepare for the Research Excellence Framework in 2014. Theimplementation <strong>of</strong> the Research <strong>and</strong> Knowledge Transfer Strategy 2009-2013 is bringing benefits in terms <strong>of</strong> a more strategic <strong>and</strong>targeted approach to research development <strong>and</strong> activity; increased ‘seed funding’ accessible to research active staff; enhancedsupport in the form <strong>of</strong> a new research development team to provide expertise in project <strong>and</strong> grant development; focus onknowledge exchange, with the appointment <strong>of</strong> a Knowledge Transfer Manager; <strong>and</strong> improved management information systems tomeet the growing significance <strong>of</strong> impact <strong>and</strong> impact assessment. The <strong>School</strong> is preparing for REF2014 across a range <strong>of</strong> fronts,including strategic leadership, repository development, <strong>and</strong> further enhancing the quality <strong>of</strong> research in each <strong>of</strong> the GSA’sschools <strong>and</strong> major academic departments.Small Specialist Institution StatusThe <strong>School</strong> has been designated by SFC as a Small Specialist Institution (SSI) which has led to additional funding to compensatefor recognised diseconomies <strong>of</strong> scale.Health <strong>and</strong> SafetyThe Director, on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Governors, is responsible for the health <strong>and</strong> safety <strong>of</strong> all staff, students <strong>and</strong> visitors to the <strong>School</strong> <strong>and</strong>for adherence to the <strong>School</strong>’s Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Policy. The <strong>School</strong> employs a full time Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Officer to provide advice <strong>and</strong>assistance. Under the <strong>School</strong>’s Health <strong>and</strong> Safety Policy, managers, staff <strong>and</strong> students all have individual responsibilities for health <strong>and</strong>safety.Employment <strong>of</strong> Disabled PersonsPeople with disabilities are <strong>of</strong>fered equal opportunities to enter employment <strong>and</strong> progress within the <strong>School</strong>. The <strong>School</strong> follows proceduresdesigned to provide for fair consideration <strong>and</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> disabled applicants <strong>and</strong> to support their training <strong>and</strong> career development needs.Employee <strong>and</strong> Student InvolvementAcademic employees <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> elect one Governor to the Board <strong>of</strong> Governors <strong>and</strong> through the Academic Council appoint a secondGovernor. Support staff elect one Governor to the Board. The Students’ Representative Council plays a full role in the life <strong>of</strong> the <strong>School</strong> <strong>and</strong>the President is a full member <strong>of</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Governors.
