The category of giving indicates the combineddollar amount that was donated between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011.The report also includes a section for sponsors of fiscal year 2011 events.The Chester County Hospital was built through the philanthropic support ofa community that recognized a need to improve the availability of healthcareto its residents. All one has to do is walk through the Hospital’s original frontdoor and look down at the beautiful gold seal to be reminded of this.Pierre S. du Pont was so impressed withthe care which his friend and employeeLewes Mason received here, he donatedone million dollars (an extraordinarysum in 1924!) to construct our existingfacility in Mr. Mason’s memory. This is the latest version ofrobotic technology and offers enhanced 3D, highdefinitionvision of the operative field, enabling usto provide cutting-edge surgery that results in lesspain to our patients and a quicker recovery time.The unwavering support of the Women’sAuxiliary resulted in the gift of the EclipseTreatment Planning System, medical technologythat is transforming the way patients with cancerreceive radiation oncology treatment. The PhillipsMatt Buffler, Clinical Managerin Respiratory Care Servicesdemonstrates the Neopuff Infant Resuscitator.1theWireless Monitoring System in our EmergencyDepartment and a new Fluoroscopy imagingdevice in Radiology were also donatedby our Auxiliary.Proceeds from our FORE Health Golf Invitational withSean O’Hair funded Neopuff Infant Resuscitatorsand neoBLUE® LED Phototherapy Lights for the wellbeingof our smallest patients who are cared for in ourLevel III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.These donations and the many more representedin this Report demonstrate a culture of sustainedphilanthropy that must continue and grow. A campaign for an endowed Chairin CardioVascular Surgery resulted in $1.2 millionfrom the generosity of numerous benefactors.Our Annual Giving programincreased 3% over lastyear and 12% over fiscalyear 2009 totals. From themany Special Events heldthroughout the year andsales from the Gift Shopand the Encore consignmentshop, the Women’s Auxiliaryhad a record year, donating$725,000 to the Foundation.We are privileged to havecommitted donors wholoyally give every year, manyyears in a row. In 1992,the family decided to rent thefirst floor rooms of GreystoneHall to individuals, companies,corporations, associationsand charitable organizationsfor weddings, receptions,rehearsal dinners, holidayparties, corporate entertaining,fundraising events and otherspecial events to help defraythe costs of maintaining andpreserving it.Their activity in thecommunity doesn’tstop there. TheJerrehian Foundationhas been a generoussupporter of TheChester County HospitalFoundation for manydecades and since 1993has additionally offeredthe use of the mansion forseveral of the Hospital’sfundraising events.When speaking of their charitable support, VeldaJerrehian Moog says, “It’s not much, but we dowhat we can. The family has many charities that wetry to support. We support charities that are close toour hearts.”Velda recalls many trips she has had to theHospital through the years, starting with her firstvisit to the emergency room as a small two yearold child. “The Chester County Hospital is a lovelyhospital and a pleasant place to be when you needcare. The way she lived her lifeand the example she set – not just for her familyand children, but for her friends –created a legacy.Caroline, affectionatelyknown as “Cookie” to herfamily and many friends,may not have had thisidea of a legacy during herlife, but she lived a life thattouched countless people andinfluenced many more. As ayoung mother raising her threedaughters with her husbandJerry in Unionville, Cookieexemplified a life well lived. Anaccomplished equestrian, shebegan riding at three yearsold and rode almost everydayuntil the last year of her life. Itwas through her love of ridingthat she met and became goodfriends with Gay Robinson, afellow Master of Foxhounds andwife of James K. Robinson, Jr.,who at that time was Chairmanof The Chester County Hospital.During the 1980s, Cookie wasalready very civic-minded and understood theimportance of supporting the community of whichshe was a part. Very few charitable organizationswere turned away, as Cookie’s generosity and senseof civic responsibility led her to support twentyor so local organizations every year. But as herphilanthropic focus developed, she became moreinterested in an organization her friend Gay hadintroduced her to – The Chester County Hospital.A great believer in community hospitals, Cookienever did like the impersonal, institutional feel ofsome of the larger hospitals. She understood thecaroline “cookie” brownThanks to“Cookie”Caroline “Cookie” Brown was achampion of The Chester CountyHospital for almost 30 years.We are thankful to her for includingthe Foundation in her estate plans.Her legacy as a true philanthropistwill live on for many years to come.theimportance of having a high-quality hospital inher community and enjoyed the neighborly qualityshe felt at The Chester County Hospital. Cookiebegan supporting the Hospital in the early 1980s,and as the years went by, her connection beganto grow stronger. Cookie grew from a supporterof the Hospital to a leader and champion of theHospital. As a member of the Friends of theCardioVascular Center, Cookieled efforts to build philanthropicsupport for the program andraise awareness of what wasavailable to her neighbors intheir own backyard. And as anindividual who had a generousspirit and caring heart forpeople from all walks oflife, she was a natural fit asa member of The ChesterCounty Hospital Foundation’sBoard of Trustees.It is hard to imagine thatCookie had the time for allof her interests. She volunteeredat the Kennett Library AdultLiteracy Program for over adecade, and her involvementlives on through Jerry, who nowteaches in the program. As abusinesswoman, she helped tomanage her family’s timber farmin Alabama. And if you were everin Greensboro, Vermont, youmay have seen Cookie passing awaffle cone through the window of the ice creamshop she ran with Jerry.Cookie’s legacy as a great friend and mother wasassured a long time ago. With her easy, friendlypersonality and warm heart, she was the typeof person who is instantly likeable, the kind offriend everybody wants to have, someone whotruly cared for others.
