The Toys forTots train is coming aroundthe corner...see, just overthere…and it’s making itsfirst stop to start collectingfor the <strong>2009</strong> Campaign.F o u n d e d i n 1 9 4 7 i nCalifornia by Major BillHendricks, USMCR, the firstcollection netted 5,000 toys.The next year, the Commandantof the Marine Corpsadopted the program andexpanded it to a nationwideoutreach effort. By 2007 all 50states as well as Puerto Ricoand the Virgin Islands wereparticipating, distributing16.7 million toys to 7.7 millionchildren nationwide.Naples joined the programin the early 1980s. The firstlocal drive was organized byE.T. Brisson and Pat Kreller.Today it is the E. T. BrissonDetachment, Marine CorpsLeague (of Naples) that conductsthe Collier CountyToys for Tots Campaign.<strong>Pelican</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> jumped into thefun 15 years ago when TierraMar resident, Lois Sabatino,had a party at her home andasked her guests to bring atoy to donate. Lois took thatone event and grew it into acommunity-wide effort thatnow encompasses everyneighborhood in <strong>Pelican</strong><strong>Bay</strong> as well as many of thecommercial businesses in<strong>Pelican</strong> <strong>Bay</strong>. Three years ago,Foundation President, JimHoppensteadt, readilyagreed to jump onto this trainride and make it an officialcommunity event.<strong>Pelican</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> is the largestsource of toys and cashdonations that the Marinesreceive. They are the firstto tell us they couldn’t do itwithout us. Bear will shortlytake up his place in whatI call the “rotunda” of theCommunity Center and willjoyfully watch the pile oftoys grow for the next sixweeks.
