2 <strong>Youth</strong> are engaged in high-interest, hands-on activities that offer a balance of age-appropriate programming that includes academic support, enrichment, recreation, arts, job skills, college prep, etc.
2 PROGRAM DESIGN AND PLANNING Intentionality in the design and planning of out-of-school time programming is another key to after-school success. Research has shown that young people crave variety as well as a structure in which variety can take place. Since our focus in after-school programming is the whole child, a mixture of horizon-broadening experiences, engaging learning activities, and meaningful opportunities for intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual, artistic, social and personal development will engage and retain the young people we work with. And while every out-of-school time program has its own genesis and objectives, we can all agree that the thought that goes into what we offer has a direct correlation to what young people get out of it. The following are key elements in building strong programming: 1. Programming offers a structured mixture of different kinds of activities and experiences. a. There is variety in the program day beyond snack, free time and homework help. b. Young people are active participants in both short-term activities and long-term projects. c. Young people can articulate new things they have done and learned in the program. d. Program provides young people meaningful opportunities for participation in program design. e. Program addresses fundamental academic and life skills and also promotes enrichment and personal expression. f. Young people get to work individually and in teams. 2. Programming intentionally creates an environment conducive to the human development of its young people and treats them in an asset-based manner. a. Staff communicates high expectations to young people and regularly acknowledges their achievements and progress. b. Program works to provide its young people with a sense of safety within its structure. c. Program fosters a sense of belonging and membership. d.
