RecommendationsRecommendation 1Figure 15: Medical Complicationsof ObesityDevelop information that meets employers’need to demonstrate the importance of andcommunicate about obesity-related activities.Informational resources for employers should addressthe costs associated with obesity/weight managementand the solutions in terms of the return on investment.Cost information should also address employee safetyand health conditions associated with that issue. Thecosts need to be reflected in terms of both direct andindirect dollars, e.g., health and productivity.Employers also need descriptive information thatexplains the relationship of obesity to other conditionsand health risks in order to better understand the fullimpact of obesity and the relevance of cost data aboutthe associated conditions. Concise visuals, such as inFigure 15, could help make the information easier tocommunicate. This graphic displays the complications and conditionsassociated with obesity. Adding associated safetyfactors would be useful as well. Such communicationswould help leadership understand the magnitude of theissue and could also inform employee communications.Source: Adapted from Yale University Rudd Center for Food Policyand ObesityObesity/Weight Management Employer Survey and Interview Project 31
