The meaning of this Ayah is apparent, as itcommands: Let not the hatred for some people,who prevented you from reaching the SacredHouse in the year of Hudaybiyyah, make youtransgress Allah's Law and commit injusticeagainst them in retaliation. Rather, rule as Allahhas commanded you, being just with every one.We will explain a similar Ayah later on,وَلاَ‏ یَجْرِمَن َّكُمْ‏ شَنَآنُ‏ قَوْمٍ‏ عَلَى أَلا َّ تَعْدِلُواْ‏ اعْدِلُواْ‏ هُوَ‏أَقْرَبُ‏ لِلت َّقْوَىAnd let not the enmity and hatred ofothers make you avoid justice. Be just:that is nearer to piety, (5:8)which commands: do not be driven by yourhatred for some people into abandoning justice,for justice is ordained for everyone, in allsituations.Ibn Abi Hatim recorded that Zayd bin Aslam said,"The Messenger of Allah and his Companionswere in the area of Al-Hudaybiyyah when theidolators prevented them from visiting the House,and that was especially hard on them. Later on,some idolators passed by them from the eastintending to perform Umrah. So the Companionsof the Prophet said, `Let us prevent those (fromUmrah) just as their fellow idolators preventedus.' Thereafter, Allah sent down this Ayah.''Ibn Abbas and others said that;"Shana'an'' refers to enmity and hate.Allah said next,وَتَعَاوَنُواْ‏ عَلَى الْبر ِّ وَالت َّقْوَى وَلاَ‏ تَعَاوَنُواْ‏ عَلَى الإِثْمِ‏ وَالْعُدْوَانِ‏ ...Help you one another in Al-Birr and At-Taqwa; but donot help one another in sin and transgression.Allah commands His believing servants to helpone another perform righteous, good deeds,14...
