In cases <strong>of</strong> infection with Bartonella, the blood smear initially shows pathogens on<br />

the outer membrane; in the further course the pathogens are increasingly localized<br />

intracellularly. In the process, the light colored center <strong>of</strong> the erythrocytes is lost (Fig.<br />

1).<br />
