MPC30S (Pre-Calculus Math Grade 11)Mr. Richard DurksenRationaleThe main goals of mathematics education areto prepare students to: solve problems communicate and reasonmathematically make connections betweenmathematics and its applications become mathematically literate appreciate and value mathematics make informed decisions ascontributors to societyGeneral ObjectivesStudents who have met these goals gain an understanding and appreciation ofthe role of mathematics in society exhibit a positive attitude towardmathematics engage and persevere in mathematicalproblem solving contribute to mathematical discussions take risks in performing mathematicaltasks exhibit curiosity about mathematics andsituations involving mathematicsSpecific Learning Outcomes are grouped into these topics:Sequences and Series- analyze arithmetic sequences and seriesto solve a problem- analyze geometric sequences and seriesto solve a problemAbsolute Values- demonstrate an understanding of theabsolute value of real numbers- graph and analyze absolute valuefunctions to solve problemsRadical Expressions- solve problems that involve operations onradicals and radical expressions withnumerical and variable radicands- solve problems that involve radicalequations (limited to square roots and nomore than two radicals)Quadratic Equations/ Functions- factor polynomial expressions- analyze quadratic functions and determinethe vertex, domain, range, direction of theopening, axis of symmetry and intercepts- identify characteristics of quadraticfunctions- solve problems that involve quadraticequationsInequalities and Systems of Equations- solve problems that involve linear andquadratic inequalities in two variables- solve problems that involve quadraticinequalities in one variable- solve, algebraically and graphically, problems that involve systems of linearquadraticand quadratic-quadraticequations in two variablesTrigonometry- demonstrate an understanding of anglesin standard position- solve problems, using sine, cosine, andtangent, for angles in standard position- applications of sine and cosine laws, including the ambiguous caseRational Expressions & ReciprocalFunctions- determine equivalent forms of rationalexpressions (limited to numerators anddenominators that are monomials, binomials or trinomials)- perform operations on rationalexpressions- solve problems that involve rationalequations- graph and analyze reciprocal functions

Basis for EvaluationThe final mark for Pre-Calculus Math 11 will be determined as follows:25% Divisional Final AssessmentTerm Work Mark Breakdown5% Attendance, Participation and Attitude75% Term Course Work 5% Assignment-based Quizzes20% Assignment Completion Checks70% Chapter TestsNotes and Assignments will be given daily and are necessary for learning and mastery of the concepts in thiscourse. The notes and assignments will (hopefully!!) be completed and kept in the student’s workbook.Step-by-step work is to be shown in all cases. These workbooks will be checked periodically for completeness. Students in my class earn credit just for attemptingand completing their homework!!!Quizzes on recently completed concepts will be given weekly (at least).Class GuidelinesI would strongly encourage teamwork among students in this course since the creation of cohesive study groupswill be of significant benefit to all students. Help each other!!Supplies: Students need a calculator, ruler, pencil-eraser, and their workbook. That’s it!!! 4 things!!!! Bring them!!!Students are expected to write their tests on the scheduled day. Any student who cannot write a test for a legitimatereason is to make alternate arrangements before the test date. If a student misses a test for illness or anappointment, they will write the test the following school day in room G8 during their spare. No exceptions.Tests are not kept by the students after they are written.Missing classes for Field Trips, vacations and extra-curricular activities is a choice that is made by the student, andchoices have consequences. Missing classes for any reason generally results in lower achievement, as the studentmisses the invaluable instruction and discussion portion of the lesson. The student is responsible for learning thematerial independently if class has been missed.Come to class prepared to work. It is assumed that if you are enrolled in Pre-Calculus, you are willing to put forth astrong effort.School rules will be followed in this class: Be on time, turn off cell phones, etc.Much leniency will be given to those students who demonstrate a willingness to participate in their own education.I am available for students to seek additional help from me. This semester Mr. D can be found during period 2(spare) and period 5 (lunch) and either before 9am or after 4pm.Let me know, make an appointment… I’ll be here!!!Mr. D’s schedule in Semester 2:P3 MPC 30SP4 MPC 30SP6 MCM 40SP7 MCM 40Sin Room J1in Room J1in Room J1in Room J1
