<strong>Cover</strong>Effect of oral supplementation enriched with omega-3 fatty acids ininflammatory parameters and oxidative stress in patients with otolaryngologistcancer treated with radiotherapyGarcia-Almeida JM, Murri-Pierri M, Lupiáñez-Pérez Y, Rico-Pérez JM, Saracho-dominguez H, Roca MM, Garcia-Aleman J, Casado-FernándezG, Medina-Carmona J, Tinahones-Madueño F Clin Nutr Suppl. 2010;5(2):140<strong>Introduction</strong><strong>ProSure</strong><strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>SupportingPublicationsPatients with otolaryngeal cancer who were undergoing radicalradiotherapy were enrolled in this prospective, single-center,open-label study.Objective:To evaluate the effect of oral supplementation enriched with omega-3fatty acids on inflammatory parameters and oxidative stress inpatients with otolaryngeal cancer treated with radiotherapy.Study Design:• Study Population: Patients with otolaryngeal cancer (n =32; omega-3 fatty acids enriched supplement (<strong>ProSure</strong>) n = 16,control n = 16)• Length of Study: During radiotherapy and 3 months aftertreatment• Intervention: <strong>ProSure</strong> or standard supplementOutcomes:Oxidative stress and inflammatory parameters were significantly betterin the patients supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids compared tothe patients who received the standard supplement.After 3 months of treatment, the patients supplemented with omega-3fatty acids experienced:• An increase in total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.05)• An increase in glutathione peroxidase activity (P < 0.01)• A decrease in lipoperoxide levels (P < 0.05)• A decrease in C-reactive protein levels (P < 0.05)Study Conclusions:Supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids appears to improveoxidative stress in patients with otolaryngeal cancer treated withradiotherapy.EPA -eicosapentaenoic acid
