20 CatholicOutlook October 2011WORLD YOUTH DAY MADRIDFINDING THE SPIRIT IN WORLD YOUTH DAY‘A moment I can’t forget’Bethany LenternFor the past 12 months, I have livedand breathed World Youth Day. Ithas been on my mind all day, everyday. I even dreamed about WYD.I had a nightmare once that I hadslept in and missed the plane thatwas meant to take me to Madrid.After getting home, I’m still strugglingto get my head around the fact that it’sover. Even though I was there, I showup to work every day thinking I needto do something to get ready for it.WYD11 was my third WYD, so inmany ways I knew what to expect.There would be crowds, heat, differentfood, daily Mass and catechesis,vocations expo, and the major events.At the same time there are alwaysexperiences and moments that you neverexpect. These are the moments that standout in your mind for years to come. AtWYD11 I experienced two such moments.I was blessed during WYD Week to beone of the Oceanic representatives at thePapal Arrival. This event required twodays of rehearsal and preparation. Weknew that being a part of the event wouldallow us to stand near to Pope Benedictand to follow him as he left Puerta deAlcala and drove to Plaza de Cibeles.What we didn’t know was that as heapproached us, he would stop and takethe time to meet each of us. For me,this moment was incredibly rushed andfrantic. I was shoved forward, shovedaway, I felt completely overwhelmed!That said, somewhere in the middleof this madness was a moment I cannotforget. It was the moment where I washolding the Holy Father’s hands, I lookedup at him and he gave me the mostgentle and warm smile I have ever seen.Since meeting Pope Benedict, I’vebeen asked over and over “what didhe say to you?” He didn’t say anything,but he didn’t need to. His smile saidmore than words could. AllI could say was, “God bless you”.I don’t think many people stop toconsider the gift Pope Benedict XVIhas given us by continuing the WYDcelebrations. They were not startedby him, yet he has embraced themwith great gusto and he cares notonly for the youth of the world as awhole, but for each individual youngperson. This moment was one I neverexpected and it still leaves me lostfor words whenever I think of it.At previous WYDs, the final weekend(the walk, Vigil, sleep out and FinalMass) has always a defining point of thepilgrimage, and WYD11 was no different.We had arrived at Cuatro VientosAirfield, had spread out our sleepingmats and sleeping bags, and wereexploring the contents of our foodbags. At one point I found myselfsitting with a group of students wolfingdown half a watermelon and discussingvocations. I have never felt more likea pilgrim than I did at that moment.In the midst of the heat, dirt, ants,watermelon, people and conversation theHoly Spirit found a niche to settle in andspend some time with us. It’s rare thatI am privileged to have such an honestand important conversation. This wasone that I walked away from thinking,“if only I could do this every day”.WYD was full of insights, challengesand faith-filled moments.
