3 gongs for <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Outlook</strong> at ACPA AwardsThe annual conference of theAustralasian <strong>Catholic</strong> PressAssociation (ACPA) was held <strong>in</strong>Adelaide from 6-9 September <strong>2011</strong>.A highlight of every conference arethe ACPA Awards for Excellence.This year the awards were presentedat the conference d<strong>in</strong>ner atthe National W<strong>in</strong>e Centre.The after d<strong>in</strong>ner speaker wasGeneral Peter Cosgrove AC, MC,CNZM, Chancellor of Australian<strong>Catholic</strong> University. The awardswere presented by MonsignorDavid Cappo, Vicar General of the<strong>Catholic</strong> Archdiocese of Adelaide.The ACPA awards are judgedby professionals work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>streampublish<strong>in</strong>g and media. Thetop awards were: Best Magaz<strong>in</strong>e– Kairos <strong>Catholic</strong> Journal, <strong>Catholic</strong>Archdiocese of Melbourne; andBest Newspaper – The Sandpiper,<strong>Catholic</strong> Diocese of Bendigo.Our diocesan magaz<strong>in</strong>e,<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Outlook</strong>, was acclaimed<strong>in</strong> three categories:• Highly Commended <strong>in</strong> BestEditorial for Bishop Anthony’sLetter (June 2010): ‘Freedomfrom fear – Refugee Week2010’. The judge said: “Veryclear, concise and referencedposition on refugees.”• W<strong>in</strong>ner of Best Advertis<strong>in</strong>gFeature/Supplement for theVocations issue (August 2010).The judges said: “The coverphotograph ‘Is God Call<strong>in</strong>gYou’ was outstand<strong>in</strong>g and thesubsequent editorial coverageshowed a great depth andfluency. The general layout wasexcellent. The theme of ‘Jesusis call<strong>in</strong>g you’ was well carriedthrough. A job well done.”• W<strong>in</strong>ner of Best Layout & Design– Magaz<strong>in</strong>e. The judge said:“This magaz<strong>in</strong>e is stand-out<strong>in</strong> shape, content and design.Its use of photography andmodern layout is superior. The prize is generously sponsored bya Sydney doctor and apologist, and a number of students from eachclass have entered every year, after meet<strong>in</strong>g certa<strong>in</strong> criteria.This year the theme of the competition was “to challenge, <strong>in</strong>spire,or call to arms”. Over a wonderful d<strong>in</strong>ner, the student body, variousguests and staff members were held enthralled by students call<strong>in</strong>gupon us to have courage <strong>in</strong> our convictions, embark upon the journeyof seek<strong>in</strong>g the truth, and most importantly, to “be not afraid!”After deliberation, the judges admitted it was diffi cult to chooseamongst the different speakers, but as it had to be, three studentswere placed. Keziah Doherty won fi rst place, Angela Schumannwas placed second and I was delighted to come third.Certa<strong>in</strong>ly one of the factors that attracted me to Campion was theiremphasis on develop<strong>in</strong>g each and every student holistically. This<strong>in</strong>cludes the development of the art of speak<strong>in</strong>g well, so crucial tothe liberal arts education.
