4 CatholicOutlook October 2011Women bear the brunt of homelessnessThe soaring cost of living across Sydneyis forcing more people to seek out homelessand supported accommodation services,with a new report showing that women bearthe biggest brunt of homelessness and housinginsecurity.CatholicCare Social Services Diocese ofParramatta is joining with other Churchesand community organisations to shine a lighton the urgent and growing problem of homelessness,especially in western Sydney, and tocall for more affordable housing to be madeavailable to people in need.To help promote discussion of homelessnessand to examine possible solutions,CatholicCare Parramatta and ChurchesHousing Inc. will co-host a Community Forumon Homelessness on 8 November. The forumwill be held at the Parkroyal Parramatta andfeature experts in the field as well as peoplewho have experienced homelessness.CatholicCare’s Executive Director, OttoHenfling, said two recent reports, fromAnglicare and the Australian Institute ofHealth and Welfare, highlighted the growingproblems surrounding homelessness.“These reports reflect the practical experienceof the Church’s support servicesin western Sydney such as CatholicCare’sCatherine Villa program and the San MiguelFamily Centre, a ministry of the De La SalleBrothers,” he said.Catherine Villa offers supported accommodationand support programs for pregnantyoung women and young mothers andtheir children. “In the past 12 months alone,we have received more than 300 requests forsupported accommodation for vulnerableyoung mothers,” Mr Henfling said. “This is asignificant increase on the previous year, andmany, many more than we have the capacityto accommodate.”The latest figures from the AustralianInstitute of Health and Welfare also showthat the use of homelessness services is onthe rise, with women aged 15-19 having thehighest rate of use by any one age group (1 inevery 51 people).“As the cost of living continues to soarin Sydney and rents remain high, it is clearthat there is an urgent need for investmentin public and supported housing to ensurethat more people, especially young mothersand their children, don’t end up living on thestreets or in their car,” Mr Henfling said.Anglicare’s State of Sydney 2011 reportlooked specifically at the impact of housinginsecurity on three groups of women: youngmothers, single women over 50 and womencaring for a son or daughter with a disability.It found that housing insecurity is not justabout shelter and poverty. 3 gongs for Catholic Outlook at ACPA AwardsThe annual conference of theAustralasian Catholic PressAssociation (ACPA) was held inAdelaide from 6-9 September 2011.A highlight of every conference arethe ACPA Awards for Excellence.This year the awards were presentedat the conference dinner atthe National Wine Centre.The after dinner speaker wasGeneral Peter Cosgrove AC, MC,CNZM, Chancellor of AustralianCatholic University. The awardswere presented by MonsignorDavid Cappo, Vicar General of theCatholic Archdiocese of Adelaide.The ACPA awards are judgedby professionals working in mainstreampublishing and media. The prize is generously sponsored bya Sydney doctor and apologist, and a number of students from eachclass have entered every year, after meeting certain criteria.This year the theme of the competition was “to challenge, inspire,or call to arms”. Over a wonderful dinner, the student body, variousguests and staff members were held enthralled by students callingupon us to have courage in our convictions, embark upon the journeyof seeking the truth, and most importantly, to “be not afraid!”After deliberation, the judges admitted it was diffi cult to chooseamongst the different speakers, but as it had to be, three studentswere placed. Keziah Doherty won fi rst place, Angela Schumannwas placed second and I was delighted to come third.Certainly one of the factors that attracted me to Campion was theiremphasis on developing each and every student holistically. Thisincludes the development of the art of speaking well, so crucial tothe liberal arts education.
