A Ton of PerseveranceBy Steve BarrettChad O’Sullivan takes three pregamepain-killing tablets just toget him through matchday, spendsmore time with the physio than he’dcare for and has undergone fouroperations in his left leg inside thepast two years. And yet in his mind, the 27-year-oldon-baller/small forward feels like afresh-faced rookie and can barelycontain his excitement.“I feel like it’s my first year at the Dogsagain,” said O’Sullivan, who thisafternoon against Norwood will runout for his landmark 100th Leagueappearance for Central District.“I’m all excited for the Finals and amactually a bit nervous running outonto AAMI Stadium.”Victory in O’Sullivan’s milestonematch would see Central qualify forits 12th straight Grand Final, afterwhat would be an unprecedented12-0 run in Second Semi-Finals.O’Sullivan’s major round fortuneshave been more mixed than most ofhis teammates. After playing in the unsuccessful2006 decider against the Eagles,he triumphed in 2007-08 beforesuffering a horrific broken leg in the2009 Grand Final against Sturt, forcing him to watch last year’sthriller from the sidelines.“I had 11 possessions in the first21 minutes and felt so good out there– I was really enjoying myself,”O’Sullivan said of that fatefulafternoon against the Double Bluesalmost 24 months ago.“Then this accident happened that Ihad no control over.”An incidental collision withteammate Scotty Dutschke causedO’Sullivan’s left leg to break in threeplaces, requiring the insertion of ametal rod in his leg and screws in hisknee and ankle.Further operations to removethe screws and clean out the anklebone, where a large chip wasdiscovered, drastically stymiedO’Sullivan’s progress.“Last year I had a crack at powerwalking 20 laps around the oval andthen tried jogging without a limp, butI was in a lot of pain,” he said.“I had setbacks at every step.”Persistent obstacles preventedO’Sullivan from launching anambitious 2010 comeback, which headmits he was “kidding myself toexpect anyway”… but not throughlack of effort. He spent much of 2010 in thecapable massaging hands of DanielBell, who assisted greatly withO’Sullivan’s recovery, and under thewing of boxing coach BradTownsend, who helped the 2010Norm Russell Medallist regainhis fitness.O’Sullivan also spent time in SouthAfrica, cheering Australia on in theFIFA World Cup, an experience hedescribed as “amazing… the bestthing to ever happen to me”, beforeflying home and trying his hand atphotography for The Advertiser, taking a series of behind-the-scenessnaps of Central’s Finals preparations. The nippy goalsneak’s expectationswere ultra-conservative when hemade his long-awaited comeback toLeague ranks against the Eagles inApril, after spending 587 agonisingdays stranded on 84 games.Following a brief stint in theChad O’ Sullivanseconds, he struggled to reach astandard anywhere near his previousform, before slowly his expectationsand output rose in unison.“Initially I was happy to get througha game and get one kick,” he said.“But in the back of my mind it wasreally frustrating that I couldn’t getback to a level I was at previously.“Now I’m back to analysing myperformances again.“It took six weeks before I startedseeing any improvement, but now myfitness and skills are improving eachweek.“I’m hopeful of making amends forlast year which was so frustratingand disappointing, and really lookingforward to feeling part of it again.”5

2011 FIRST SEMI-FINALSTAT CHAT Panthers v Eagles By Robert Laidlaw6In the 1950s, West Torrens played in six First Semi-Finals,including a one-point success over Norwood in ‘54, whichwas the last time the Eagles won any type of Finals gameup to amalgamating with Woodville in 1991.The biggest margin in a First Semi-Final occurred in1981, when Norwood 19.19 beat the Panthers 6.14 for an83-point victory.Sturt hold the record for the lowest First Semi score from1948, when it kicked 4.9, but only lost by 27-points to WestAdelaide’s 7.18 – the lowest winning score. There have been 11 First Semi-Finals with less thana goal between the teams, including two draws, in 1933(North and Norwood) and 1969 (West and Torrens),with the first replay decided by just one-point, the Redlegsvictorious. Two other First Semi-Finals have been decided by asingle point, with Torrens’ 1954 success over Norwoodand Glenelg’s thrilling victory over the Double Blues fiveyears later.Amazingly only South and Norwood from current clubshave a losing record in First Semi-Finals, with the Redlegs35 appearances, 15 victories and 19 losses all leading theway. From 79 First Semis since 1931, there have been twodraws, with 36 victors going on to make the Grand Finaland only eight successfully annexing the premiership –Sturt (1932 and 1976) and Port (1958 and 1998) twice, while North (1931), Torrens (1945), West (1947) andNorwood (1984) have each done it once.Justin Cicolella.Today is the first time South Adelaide and Woodville-West Torrens have met in any type of Final since theEagles began in 1991, while against the old West Torrens, the Panthers won the only First Semi between the sides, in1937, by 50 points.Since 1931, South has played in nine First Semi-Finals forthree wins – but only one since 1940, which was a21-point victory over Norwood in 1979, when the Pantherswent on to play in its most recent Grand Final.Four of the Panthers’ six losses have been against NorthAdelaide, including its most recent Finals appearance in2006 – by 25 points – and in 1990, when the Roosters’booted a record First Semi score of 23.14.The Eagles have been in eight First Semi-Finals for a 4-4win-loss record. They have played in six over the pastdecade, including the past two and three of the past four.Woodville only played in one First Semi, a seven-pointwin over Port Adelaide in 1986, while West Torrens playedin 16 for just four victories and a draw. In 1945 the Eaglesbeat North by six points on the way to winning the flag.TEN YEARS AGO2001 – Port Adelaide 18.9 (117) d Norwood 9.19 (73)The major difference between Port Adelaide andNorwood in the 2001 First Semi was accuracy, with theMagpies winning by 44 points in spite of having one lessscoring shot.Port had 11 goalscorers – Mark Harwood leading theway with 5.1 – and only five pointscorers, while theRedlegs had seven players recording goals and 12booting behinds. Magarey Medallist Ryan O’Connorwas best for the Magpies, while Brett James led the wayfor Norwood.FIVE YEARS AGO2006 – North Adelaide 14.18 (102) d South Adelaide11.11 (77)The Finals fairytale finished for South Adelaide inthe 2006 First Semi-Final, when North Adelaide kickedseven last-quarter goals to come from behind to win by25 points. For the first three-quarters there wasn’t much betweenthe teams, with the Panthers holding a 13-point advantageat the final change, with North proving too strong in thelast term, in spite of only having 17 fit men. Chris Ladhamswas the Roosters’ best and booted five goals, whileStephen Kenna was South’s best.

2011 second SEMI-FINALSTAT CHAT CENTRAL DISTRICT v NORWOOD By Robert LaidlawFor the second consecutive season Central District andNorwood meet in the Second Semi-Final, with lastyear’s clash the first time they have played against eachother in the double-chance game. And with the two teams playing off in the 2010 GrandFinal, Norwood has now become the first club to playagainst the Bulldogs in every type of Final, and withCentral’s two victories last season, the Finals ledger is tiedat 5-5.The Bulldogs today will be trying to win its 12thconsecutive Second Semi, which is the most straight yearsany team has won any type of Final, the second best is PortAdelaide’s six straight Grand Final successes from 1954.On the back of its current streak Central has an amazing12-2 win-loss record in Second Semi-finals to be the bestperformed side in such Finals, with only Port Adelaide (26-22) having more victories. In contrast, Norwood has one of the worse SecondSemi-Final records, with just five victories from 19 games, and has the lowest score with 2.5 against Port’s 10.17in 1988.From its most recent five premiership years, Norwoodhas only won one Second Semi – 1982, while three timesit has recovered from losses to win the Grand Final, in1975 (Glenelg), 1978 (Sturt) and 1997 (Port). The highest Second Semi-Final score was PortAdelaide’s 24.20 against Sturt in 1980, with no teamreaching the 20 goal mark since the Eagles 20-13 againstthe Magpies in 1994.Four times a losing Second Semi-Final team has kicked16 goals, the record highest Norwood’s 16.14 againstSouth (19.16) in 1938. The Redlegs also have the fourthmark with 16.10 to Glenelg (18.14) in 1975.Since the very first Second Semi-Final in 1931, whereSturt beat the Magpies by a point, there have been 13games decided by less than a goal. The Bulldogs have apair of two-point wins in the past decade, against theEagles in 2004 and against Glenelg in 2009.In a four-year period Norwood was involved in threeclose Second Semis, beating Port by three points in 1947,losing to Torrens the following year by the same margin, then triumphing over Glenelg by five points in ‘50.Norwood’s Darren Pfeiffertakes a strong mark. From the 77 Second Semis contested since 1931, thewinner has gone on to win the flag 51 times, while theloser has rebounded to win 18 premierships.TEN YEARS AGO2001 – Central District 19.10 (124) d Eagles 15.9 (99)The 2001 Second Semi-Final between Central Districtand Woodville-West Torrens started as an arm-wrestle,with the Bulldogs breaking the game open with five goalsin the final 12 minutes of the first quarter, to go 28 pointsup at the first break.Central had all the answers the rest of the way, withMartin McKinnon best for the Bulldogs, and MichaelStevens, Daniel Healy and Simon Arnott booted threegoals each, while for the Eagles, Nick Pesch was thehardest worker and Ken McGregor kicked four majors.FIVE YEARS AGO2006 – Central District 13-5 (83) d Eagles 6-11 (47)After Central District dominated Woodville-West Torrensfrom 2000 to 2005, with eight consecutive Finals victories,it looked like the Eagles would finally taste success inSeptember after a dominant 2006.But the hoodoo continued in the Second Semi-Final,when the Bulldogs won by 36 points, in spite of onlyhaving one more scoring shot. The game was over at halftime when Central led 9.3 to 1.5. Richard Cochrane wasbest for the victors, while Chad O’Sullivan booted fourgoals.8Test your local footy knowledgeYou can now place a bet on all SANFL matches: head-to-head andpremiership winner. TheCan Norwood do it?Anyone and everyone who is nota Central supporter will getbehind the Redlegs this weekend asit aims to end an 11-year BulldogSecond Semi reign.Any opposition supporter orneutral football fan will beguaranteed to get behind whoeverthe Dogs play this Finals Series. That is the typical Australianattitude – if someone is successful,go for the other guy.Norwood looked good against theEagles and if it can emulate thatkind of pressure on the Dogs thenwho knows. Its zone forced theEagles into many a mistake but weknow that Central will use the ballbetter and in turn are able to put theRedlegs’ ball carriers under muchmore pressure than the boys fromWoodville did.For the record I am going out on alimb as I was so impressed withNorwood last week and I ampicking them. Call me crazy to tipagainst Central in the month ofSeptember but I’ve just got thisfeeling. What a return to the Finals forSouth last weekend. If it had kickedstraight who knows what thedamage could have been againstthe Bays. There will be no room forsloppy skills today against afired-up Eagles. Can Eagles’premiership coach Ron Fullerlead his South men to bringabout the demise of his old club andsend them packing in straight sets? They can, but I don’t think they will. The Eagles will win and South willcelebrate a season in which it tooksome giant leaps forward.Phantomthe ghost that talksI received a great story in thepost the other day. (The SANFL is great!)SincerelyRichard BerryIn 1991, I was suddenly thrustinto football oblivion. I was notcomfortable with the Woodville-West Torrens merger and at thesame time came to the northernarea. As part of that process andgetting to know the localcommunity, through theencouragement of a friend, Iattended some BusinessLuncheons at the Central DistrictFootball Club. The community involvement andresultant friendships have beengreat.I have been invited to becomeinvolved at the club on differentlevels and the old saying is true –The more you put in, the more youget out.To actually put your colours onand stand with other supporterswho actually know the game is agreat feeling. It is a feeling ofbelonging that many do not havein their family lives. That sense of belonging is awinner and the SANFL offers thatto people. Home games especiallyare a catch up time.I have been the oval announcerat Playford Alive Oval since 1993.People come and have a chatabout all sorts – not only footy! It’s important that we continue topresent our product asprofessionally as we can but notlose that human touch.Due to a background ofentertaining, I have been able toassist the club on variouscommittees, compering functionslike the Gala Auction, PresentationDinner, Melbourne Cup etc.I brought back the Bulldogmascot idea and was actually inthe dog for some years with ‘95,‘96 and the 2000 Premiership themost memorable! The community spirit in thenorth is admirable. To changecolours and allegiance from oneclub to another is not easy but likea player, it can really be beneficial.10

YOUNG GUNS EXPLODINGONTO THE SANFL STAGEBy Peter ArgentAs we look back on season2011, some of our youngeststars are looking forward to thebright lights of the AFL.Early this year, we saw somespectacular young players take onLeague football for the first time. This has continued rightthroughout the season with Northdebuting 17 year old Sam Mayesand 16 year old Nicholas Amato.South, in the final minor roundmatch, debuted Darcy Hourigan, itsyoungest ever player. Houriganeclipsed 2010 debutant ToddMcKay’s record by five monthswhen he played at the age of 15years and 11 months.“It was really good, the pace of thegame was so much quicker and tohave a really loud crowd atNorwood made it even better,” theStrathalbyn Football Club productsaid of his debut in the Panthers’Round 23 win over Norwood.“To have made my debut in suchan important game for the club, torecord what was our mostimportant win for the season wasjust a perfect way to start myLeague career.”Hourigan, who celebrated his 16 thbirthday last Sunday as South wonits Elimination Final against theEagles, began the season as theskipper of the Panthers’ U16s. Hewas then elevated to the U18s andtravelled to Sydney with theMcDonalds U16 Championshipwinning State Team.“The State experience was a realhighlight of the year and I cameback and played a couple of goodgames in the U18s before getting acall-up to play with the Reserves. The coaches just really encouragedme, telling me that I was playinggood footy and to keep doing it.“After a couple of Reserves gamesI got told I was playing League, it’sall pretty surreal.”Hourigan, Mayes and Amato havekept us entertained with stunningdisplays in the closing rounds butDarcy Hourigan.Photo courtesy of Nick Hook,Insanity Multimedia.let’s look back and some of theyoungsters who caught our eyesearly in the season.Ugandan Emmanuel Irra at thePanthers, explosive small forwardfrom Glenelg, Ben Kennedy,Norwood’s versatile small manLuke Brown and Sturt’s indigenoustalent Chad Wingard have all madetheir mark in 2011.All of this group played State U18football this season as SA’s Macca’sCup State side took part in a sevengamecampaign under the tutelageof SANFL High PerformanceManager Brenton Phillips.Other members of this squad whoenjoyed the rigours of Leaguefootball include Redleg MichaelIaleggio and South Adelaidebottom-aged U18 McKay.Glenelg left-footed forward LukeHender made his debut in theRound 8, Friday night AdelaideOval fixture against Sturt andkicked a goal with his first kick.Mitchell Grigg played his firstLeague game at Norwood as a 16year old, back in Round 23, 2009and featured in another four seniormatches during the Redlegs’productive 2010 season. The Port Adelaide pair of clevermidfielders John Nyskohus andSam Tonkes were members ofPort’s 2010 Reserves premiershipside and have enjoyed furthersenior success this year.Tonkes was honoured with thehighly regarded Bob Lee Medal asbest-on-ground in this fixture. It is a unique year in the AFL draftthis year with the AFL’s newestclub, Greater Western Sydney,14

having a similar monopoly on earlypicks as Gold Coast had lastseason. The Giants can pick-up 17year olds born in the first fourmonths of the year. Irra, McKay,Kennedy, Josh Simpson (Norwood),Jimmy Toumpas (Eagles), MatthewMcDonough (Eagles), Aaron Luccon(Norwood) and Brodie Grundy(Sturt) all fit into this category.South Australia’s U18 captainChad Wingard is touted as a firstround draft pick.“Chad is a super talent, but stillpretty green,” his Sturt coach, LukeNorman said.“He’s full of ability and has a bigfuture in football.“A kid with a good attitude, he’sattentive and very coachable.“He’s the type of footballer whocan play anywhere on the ground, across half forward, on a wing orthrough the middle.“He could even play across halfback, but I believe he’s best suitedaround the goals at this stage of hiscareer.”Originating from the BrightonBombers, Ben Kennedy has beengiven high accolades.“He was a cut above the rest,”Glenelg Football Manager KenApplegarth said.“We have been looking for a smallforward who could play throughthe middle as well and kick goals, since I arrived here eight years agoand Ben fits the bill perfectly.“He’s quick, has real footballsmarts and is a powerful kick.“There are a lot of aspects of ayoung Tony McGuinness in the wayhe plays.”Emmanuel Irra is a good friend ofKennedy’s and fellow student at thefamous football nursery of SacredHeart College.“His skill level is terrific and hetakes the game on,” South Adelaidementor Ron Fuller said.“Emmanuel has a strong workethic and his ability to finishimpressed me.“Also importantly he’s proved hecan handle the bigger bodies ofsenior SANFL football.”After an outstanding AFL draftin 2010 where SA footballproduced three first-roundselections, expect more excitingtalents from the class of 2011 tofollow in their footsteps.Emmanuel Irra.Ben Kennedy.15
