BUILDING INSULATIONS
2007
APPROVAL GUIDE
CHAPTER 6
BUILDING INSULATIONS
Insulating materials may occur in building construction to reduce heat or sound transmission through a wall, roof
or floor-ceiling assembly. See DESCRIPTIONS OF ROOFING PRODUCTS Chapter, INSULATIONS FOR ROOF
CONSTRUCTION, for roof insulations.
The insulation listed below may be a surface treatment exposed to the building occupancy or as core material
faced with metal, gypsum wallboard, concrete or masonry.
The listed assemblies are not intended as long-term fire walls or barriers since fire endurance was not evaluated.
See SPECIFICATION TESTED PRODUCTS Chapter, Fire Resistant Constructions, for hourly rated systems.
FM Approvals Standard 4880 (2005) Wall-Ceiling/Roof Constructions
Combustible insulations, bonding agents, facing and finish materials contained in walls, ceilings and roof
assemblies may exhibit self-propagating fire spreading tendencies when combustible vapors are emitted upon
heating and rated Class II requiring sprinkler protection. The quantity of combustible vapors and the maximum rate
of heat released by the assembly, in combination with sufficient oxygen and a positive heat balance, will start the
self-propagating process.
The following assemblies have been evaluated using FM Approvals Standard 4880 (2005). The Class 1 systems
exhibited limited fire spread and fuel contribution and may not require special protection such as sprinklers, when the
building walls do not exceed the listed height.
The FM Approved assemblies are not intended as loadbearing or long-term fire barriers, since fire endurance was
not evaluated. (See SPECIFICATION TESTED PRODUCTS Chapter, Fire Resistant Constructions, for hourly rated
systems.) If building use, occupancy or furnishings are combustible and expected to sustain a prolonged fire beyond
15 minutes, automatic sprinklers should be installed to control the ignition source.
Materials and method of installation are described as they were tested and must be maintained to insure the same
fire performance. In cases where the structural framing supporting metal clad insulated panels is on the interior side
of the panels, the intent of the listed fastening requirements may be met if the panels are secured to interior framing
1) with clips that in effect fasten the interior panel facer directly to the framing or 2) by fastening through the framing
directly into the interior panel facer. Smoke and other products of combustion were not evaluated for toxicity.
This section describes each type of construction. The individual characteristics of each manufacturer’s assembly
follow the manufacturer’s name and address.
The wall and ceiling constructions listed in this section (FM Approvals Standard 4880 (2005) Wall-Ceiling/Roof
Constructions) are Approved for interior use only unless listed later in Chapter 6 in the FM Approvals Standard 4881
(2005) Exterior Wall Constructions section as exterior wall constructions or in RoofNav as roof constructions.
FM Approvals Standard 4881 (2005)
Class 1 Exterior Wall Constructions
FM Approved exterior wall systems are Class 1 fire rated in accordance with Approval Standard 4880. Class 1
exterior wall systems may be rated for use to unlimited height, a maximum height of 50 ft (15.2 m) or a maximum
height of 30 ft (9.1 m).
FM Approved Class 1 exterior wall assemblies have a wind load rating expressed as a pair of inward and outward
acting pressures (P inward and P outward or +P/-P) determined using a combination of static and cyclic pressure tests.
The rating is the lowest pair of pressures (inward and outward) attained in the static pressure test or the cyclic
pressure test. The ratings are in increments of 5 psf (0.24 kPa) based on the inward (positive) pressure. The
minimum rating for Approval is 30 psf (1.44 kPa) for the inward (positive) pressure. The magnitude of the pressure
on the leeward side of a building is equal or higher than the pressure on the windward side so the outward pressure
is based on pressure coefficients of either (-1.4P) or (-2.0P) based on an applied pressure (+P) on the windward side.
FM Global Property Loss Prevention Data Sheet 1-28 is used to determine the minimum wind load rating(s) required
based on the building’s geometry and geographic location.
FM Global recognizes three (3) different wind zones referred to as Zone HM, Zone H and Zone NH. The FM Global
Property Loss Prevention Data Sheets are used to determine which zone applies for a particular location. Zone HM
is used to denote those exterior wall assemblies that have been qualified for locations that are subject to both
hurricane force winds and missile impact from windborne debris. Assemblies may meet the requirements of either
the large missile (-LM) or the small missile (-SM) impact test. Assemblies meeting the missile requirements of the
Florida Building Code are further designated as (FL) after the -LM or -SM designation. Zone H is used to denote
those exterior wall assemblies that have been qualified for locations that are subject to hurricane force winds but not
subject to missile impacts from windborne debris. Zone NH is used to denote those exterior wall assemblies in
non-hurricane zones that are not subjected to either hurricane force winds or missile impacts from windborne debris.
FM Approved Class 1 exterior wall assemblies have a Hail Resistance Rating determined using tests that simulate
the expected impact of hail. The ratings available are Severe and Moderate. The ratings are consistent with
corresponding ratings and impact energies used in Approval Standard 4470, Class 1 Roof Covers. FM Global Loss
Prevention Data Sheet 1-29 is used to determine the impact (hail) rating needed for a particular geographic location.
The entries in the table should be interpreted as follows:
Thickness indicates the minimum Approved panel thickness (usually wind test related) and the maximum
Approved panel thickness (usually fire test related).
Width indicates the minimum Approved panel coverage width (usually fire test related) and the maximum
Approved panel width (usually wind test related).
Maximum Height indicates the maximum continuous height of panels that may be installed (fire test related).
Hail Resistance Ratings, Wind Load Ratings and Zones are described above.
Maximum Steel Spacing is the maximum spacing between steel supports, Minimum Steel Thickness is the
minimum steel support thickness and Minimum Steel Yield Stress is the minimum steel support strength required to
achieve the indicated Wind Load Ratings.
Suspended Plastic Ceilings
Plastic suspended ceilings of translucent or opaque panels are used to conceal ducts, sprinkler piping, lighting
fixtures or for decorative purposes. All products are of low combustibility. Because they are designed to be heat
sensitive, promptly moving out of their setting, they will not significantly interfere with the operation of automatic
sprinklers located above. When other building components and occupancy do not require sprinkler protection, these
products may be used without creating such a need.
Restraining clips must not be used to hold the panels in their metal suspension frame. Clips which have been
tested and FM Approved may be used for this purpose. Painting or coating the panels is prohibited since this may
insulate and therefore hinder the immediate drop-out response to the early stage of a fire. However, panels which
have been tested and FM Approved with a factory-applied coating may be used.
The polystyrene ceiling tiles listed in Section B are expanded from the modified grade bead resins produced by
the manufacturers listed in Section A. These products have met the fire test requirements of FM Approval Standard
No. 4651.
Unless otherwise indicated in the listings, all polystyrene panels are nominal 1.0 lb/ft 3 (16.0 kg/m 3 ) density.
These materials have been evaluated for surface flame spread potential utilizing the FM Approvals Wall-Ceiling
Channel Test Apparatus or UBC 26-3 room test with material installed on the ceiling only. When subjected to fire
exposure, the materials shrink and melt-away without advance of flames and without producing flaming droplets.
When installed over a non-combustible substrate, these materials would not create a need in and of themselves
for automatic sprinkler protection when not required for other features of building construction or occupancy.
The tiles may not be installed on any fire rated floor-ceiling or roof-ceiling assembly.
Painting or coating of the tiles is prohibited since this may alter their fire performance.
Unless otherwise noted, maximum thickness of the tiles is limited to 1 ⁄2 in. (13 mm).
Thermo-Tile. Expanded polystyrene beveled edge tongue-and-groove joint ceiling tile, nominal 12 by 12 in. (305 by 305 mm) by 1 ⁄2 or 1 in.
(13 or 25 mm) thick, nominal density 1.5 pcf (24 kg/m 3 ). Tiles may be installed directly over a solid nailable noncombustible substrate or
applied to noncombustible 1 by 3 in. (25 by 76 mm) furring strips 12 in. (305 mm) on center using four 1 ⁄2 in. (13 mm) staples per tile, two
to each stapling flange.
