WILSON COMBATTwenty years ago, combatpistol competition was justemerging as an exciting newshooting sport. No one knewwhat the future had in store. In fact, 1976 was the year BillWilson of Wilson Combat'mfirst heard of this excitingnew type of competition takingplace at the Midwest PracticalPistol League in Columbia,Mo.Bill loved shooting, so hegrabbed his Browning Hi Powerand drove 250 miles from hishome in Berryville, Ark., to hisfirst practical pistol match. You have to remember thatthis was when IPSC was in itsinfancy and USPSA had not yetbeen founded. In those days, your only other options for competitionwere bullseye and PPC.Needless to say, Bill Wilsoncame out of his first matchhooked on practical shooting. At his second match, Billshot a Colt Python, since thatmatch didn't require a reload. But it was the third match, when Bill used a stock "out ofthe box" Colt Governmentmodel, that he learned a valuablelesson that most experiencedshooters take for grantedtoday. "Most 1911 Autos are notreliable out of the box."The .45choked, sputtered, and basicallydied in its first match. This embarrassing experiencewas one that Bill did notwish to repeat, so he sent thepistol off to a big name pistolsmithto improve its performance. When the pistolcame back, Bill was still verydisappointed with its reliabilityand sold it shortly after. It wasat that point that he decided totry his hand at customizing hisown gun. After all, he had beentrained as a jeweler and watchThese are a few of the items in Wilson's new line of leather goods.maker, which gave him a feelfor fitting small precision parts. He discovered that he was ableto turn out a 1911 Auto thatwas highly reliable, accurate,Bill Wilson now spends much of histime developing and testing new productswhile his five full-time pistolsmithstake care of the customwork.and handled well. Bill's fellowshooters saw his work and thenext thing he knew, he wasmodifying 1911's for other practicalshooters. He continued hisshooting career while he andhis wife, Darla, opened Wilson'sGun Shop, now called WilsonCombat. This humble beginning ofWilson Combat has lead to along series of innovative customcomponents, and an unparalleledrecord of USPSA Championshipswon with Wilson gunsin the hands of such shootinglegends as Rob Leatham, BrianEnos, and Jerry Barnhart. Today,Wilson Combat is a multimilliondollar company withmore than 30 employees and anewly expanded 11,000 squarefoot facility. Bill Wilson nolonger does the custom pistolsmithinghimself; that is leftin the capable hands of his fivefull-time pistolsmiths with anaverage of 11 years experienceeach. Instead, he divides histime between his duties as thepresident of Wilson Combatand his work developing andtesting new products. The amazing thing aboutBill is that after 18 years andmore than 300 parts for the1911 Auto, he still has the samePage 10 September/October 1996
innovative drive as he did whenthe company first began. Thisyear, for instance, Wilson Combatintroduced more than 30new items, including the newShok-Buffs® for rifles (AK-47,SKS, FN/FAL, Mini 14, 10/22,M1A) and several BulletProofrm parts for 1911 Autoswhich will be replaced for freeif they ever break or wear outunder normal use.For most manufacturers, this would be a pretty full load, but at Wilson Combat, it's justa small part of what's happeningin 1996. With a mid-yearintroduction of the new line ofconcealed leather products, theinitial production of the new1996A2Tm pistol and the expansionof the facility to twice itsoriginal size, things have beenvery busy.Bill has always been fascinatedwith holster design andwanted to produce a line ofuser-friendly top-quality holsters.Well, he's done it, and theresults are incredible. The initialline includes four concealedcarry holsters, one Limitedcategory/range holster, anda variety of belts and magazinepouches. These products arecrafted from top quality cowhide, horsehide, and sharkskin. You can now own one of theseWilson Combat Tm holsters foryour 1911-style auto, Glock, orSig.For the last 18 years, WilsonCombat has customized 1911autos, bringing them to a muchhigher level of performance.Wilson Combat is now introducinga new generation of 1911-style auto called the 1996A2pistol. This new pistol is basedon a precision CNC machinedslide and frame made fromsolid steel forgings. Both theslide and frame have beenhardened for maximum durability. Then instead of usingBill Wilson's new 1996A2.stock parts, the 1996A2 is assembledusing only WilsonCombat components. The resultis a production pistol that hasmuch closer tolerances than allowedin the 1911 specifications, providing the pistol withgreatly improved accuracy, handling characteristics and reliability. Finally, here is a1911-style pistol that is 1001‘,1a33a811Mt I1■014,0 000000 0 00percent reliable out of the box,the 1996A2 pistol.Twenty years ago, practicalshooting was a wide open frontier. In those days, the equipmentwas simple and the ruleswere few. Bill Wilson was oneof the early pioneers who realizedthe need for high qualitycustom 1911 auto parts andhad the vision and talent requiredto provide the productsthat 1911 enthusiasts werelooking for. Things havechanged since Bill shot his firstmatch with his Browning HiPower, and you can be sure youwill see more change over thenext twenty years. There is onething you can depend on, however;Wilson Combat will bethere with new innovativeproducts in the future just asthey have for the past 18 years.MAGAZINE EXTENSION KITSBFM - 001 STI/SV/McC 170MMadded cap. 45ACP + 4, 38 Sup., 9 x 21, 40SW, 10mm, 9 x 25 +5kit price ea $49.95BFM - 002 PARA-ORDNANCE 170MMadded cap 45 ACP + 6, 10mm, 9 x 25, 9 x 21, 40 SW, 38 Sup., +7kit price ea $62.95BFM - 003 PARA-ORDNANCE 140MMadded cap. 45 ACP + 2 or 3, 38 Sup., 9 x 21, 40 SW, lOmm, 9 x 25,9 x 23, +3 or 4 kit price ea $29.95Extra MAG SPRINGS ALL MODELS ea $ 8.25NEW!
