It has long been a USPSApolicy to send a Quarterly NationalPistol Classification bookto the affiliated clubs and sectionsonce each quarter. Thebook contains the current membershipnumbers and classificationsof all members, and itspurpose is to provide a quickand easy reference for localleaders, particularly match directorswho are attempting toconfirm competitor information. In the June 1996 issue of InTouch, we proposed distributingthe book on computer diskas a text file usable by any wordprocessing program. We invitedthose affected to let us know ifthat practice would cause aproblem. We received negativecomments from only two of themore than 400 clubs, so we decidedto go forward with thedisks. Our reason for making thechange is financial. Producingand mailing the information onIntroduced in1993, PRO-EARShove been wornby more Pro-Match Winnersthan oll otherscombined.FROM THE EDITOR30 DAY MONEY BACKGUARANTEEDave Thomas, Executive Managerdisk as opposed to the booksaves an estimated $3,100 peryear. According to the results ofthe survey included with theEasy Score program sent outearlier this year, virtually allclubs now have access to a computerand printer. These facts, taken together with the lack ofresponse to the In Touch article, seemed to justify thechange. The June Quarterly NationalPistol Classification was sentWHAT THE BIGGUNS WEAR!THE PRO-EARS ADVANTAGE• Alds in target concentration • Speens reaction rime • Lets you hearyour steel • Lightweight, compact ond comfortoble • SlimLine/Modulor design for easy storage/replocement • Dualityconstruction ond superior electronirs for amplification and protethonogoinst damaging noises • Independent volume controls • Min. 400boors battery life • 5 Year Warro"..Pro shooters need utter concentration, fast iimes, acurory annearingptotection Natty svhy more pro shooters wear PRO-EARS.PRO-EARS... We have had approximatelytwo dozen responsessince then. Approximatelyhalf of these calls involvedtechnical questionswhich we were able to answerto the satisfaction of the caller;the other half have been frompeople who preferred the book. The disk contains two versionsof the file. One is an AS-CII, or text, file, formatted in astandard language that can beread by all word processing programsof which we are aware. The second is a WordPerfect 5.1for DOS file, formatted to beread by WordPerfect DOS version5.1. However, MicrosoftWord for Windows will alsoopen and read the file as a WPfile or will convert it to an MSWord file format. Also included on the disk isa "Read Me" file in text formatwhich contains directions foruse of the information in theother files. Many word processor programswill allow you to sort bystate. You can then select onlythose states that affect you andprint them out, giving you amuch smaller document thanthe 130 pages of the completefile. Our concern is to please asmany people as possible. It iswdomatic in business that eachunhappy customer that complainsrepresents 10 that donot. It is also true that happycustomers rarely express theirsatisfaction. The challenge forus, therefore, is to get an accuratepicture of member preferences. The only way I know ofto do it is to ask you.Which do you prefer, thebook or the disk?Page 2September/October 1996

The problemis that it's tolerated, even whenit's blatant as reported in Mr.Darryl Conner's letter. Mr.Conner, the solution lies withyou and all the other competitorswho let this behavior continue. It doesn't lie with Andy, the board, or NROI. If you'rethe RO, DQ this competitor (ifhe deserves the term) on thespot. But you don't have to bethe RO or even on the samesquad. If you witness the behavioryou described, file a13.05 Second party protest. Ifit's handled properly by thehost club, the results must besubmitted to NROI. So even ifyour protest is disallowed, you've started a paper trail. IfLetters for publication should be nomore than 350 words and may be editedfor length or clarity.you don't act, though, you don'tget to whine. Blatant sandbaggingis just as much grossunsportsmanlike conduct as ifthe competitor were using foullanguage to your wife or daughter.Don't tolerate it. Don't letothers tolerate it.Nick Jones, A-14838• PROFESSIONALISM &COLTRTESYIs our shooting sport a game,or is it so serious that our feelingsget in the way of fellowship? That is a question I havebeen asking myself over thepast three months.
