WHERE DOES ALL THE MONEY GO?A Quick Analysis of the 1996 Area 1 Championshipby Bill Burkard, L-1825, (Match Director, and Steve Hulet, A-12647 (FinanceDirector)It's 9:30 p.m., the hotel staffis clearing tables, and the lastof the E.A.R. certificate winnersare being fitted in the corner. Ashooter comes up to congratulateyou on a great match andasks "how much do you makefor running the match?" After alittle pause to consider the yearof effort and the hundreds ofhours put into the match, yourespond, "No one gets paid to dothis."It occurred to several of usthat the majority of the 260shooters that have just clearedoff the prize table have no ideaof how the finances of a bigUSPSA match are managed. Inan effort to provide a littlebackground, we offer the followingsummary of the 1996 Mile-Hi Showdown/Area 1 Championship.Planning for the 1996 Mile-Hi Showdown/Area 1 Championshipbegan the day after the1995 match. We began with afinal review of the prior year'scosts and prepared a preliminarybudget, modified to accountfor the expected numberof shooters, using Quicken.During the year precedingthe match, the budget was constantlymodified as actual costsand better estimates were determined. As match day approached,we compared revisedbudgets with items left to payto see how much cash could beadded to the prize table, andabout one hour before theawards banquet, we deter-mined how much cash could beallocated to the prize table. Forthe 1996 match we allotted$900 cash for the top matchwinners in addition to the prizetable. The budget also acted as achecklist for the purchase ofsupplies and other expenseswhen compared to the previousyear. This process has workedwell for the Mile-Hi Showdown, and it could help those planningto run big matches in thefuture.Let's see how the $100 entryfee is used.Prizes - 5 0%50 percent of all proceedsgoes to prizes.
