THE 1996 AREA 8 CHAMPIONSHIPTodd Jarrett is apparently not puzzled by "Greg's Conundrum."by Mike Martin, A-6647photos by Mitzi Davis, 7'Y-9499It was 13 stages, 237 roundsminimum, 286 competitors,1200 IPSC targets. 70,000 pasters,68,640 rounds fired (minimum),more than 1,000 hoursof planning and design—and2 minutes, 35.66 seconds toshoot it. That's how long ittook Todd Jarrett to shoot, and win, the match. The match ran from Thursdayto Sunday over MemorialDay weekend at theFredericksburg Rod and Gunr -LMosier Card,THE SHOOTERS BEST FRIEND"The Knife"We Carry Most popular Models hayBENCHMADE CQC7. Todd and Man looked tobe in the lead, but both JerryBarnhart and Frank Garciawere on Sunday's schedule.Brian had gone to New Mexicoto shoot the Area 2 match, butTodd was at the range workingas a range master and keepingan eye on Jerry.Halfway through Jerry'smatch, Todd told me that Jerrywas going to beat him by 14match points. Voltaire, Scottsdale, AZ 85254 10-5 M.S.Tfor Jerry, how could Todd call itthen? Todd just smiled andsaid, "He's going to take me by14 match points." Well, I neverargue with Todd, and Jerry wasshooting like Jerry Barnhart. But on Jerry's last stage, a 35-round field course that simulatedan airplane rescue, JerryBarnhart proved he was mortalafter all. He ran past a targetwithout engaging it, and thenmissed a popper that openedthe airplane door and had to goback and re-engage it. He finishedthe stage 8.5 seconds and30 points behind Todd.Meanwhile, Frank Garciawas shooting his usually superbmatch. Frank had won the Area8 Limited match for the previoustwo years, and he continuedhis torrid streak, beatingBrian Enos by eight matchpoints to earn his third straightvictory. We had worked for tenmonths to plan and design thematch, and our number onegoal was maximum shooter enjoyment. To achieve this, we selected13 stages requiring aminimum of 237 rounds. Nostage required more than eightshots from any one position. Some of the stages gave theshooter the option of firingmore than eight rounds, but theadditional rounds were alwaysfired at more difficult targetswhich were more easily en-Page 20 September/October 1996
gaged further on. We tried veryhard to minimize the advantagesof high-capacity magazines;we wanted to test theshooters' ability to shoot, nottheir ability to buy equipment!Working towards the shooters'enjoyment, we set up thematch to be shot entirely inone-half day by having only fivepeople per squad. (There weresix per squad on Sunday, butwe only had a morning squad.)Of course, last minute contingenciesmeant the occasionalsix-man squad, but in generalwe kept it to five. We also hadthree range masters, a "rangewarden," and a CRO on eachstage.Twelve clubs participated inthe match: Black Creek P.S.(Va.), Competitive Shooters ofStatesville (N.C.), FactoryvilleSportsman's Club (Pa.).Fredericksburg P.S. (Va.), HancockCo. P.S. (W. Va.), IndianaBow & Gun (Pa.),I.W.L.A. of York (Pa.),Luzerne Co. L.E.O.A.(Pa.), P.P.S.A. atLower Providence(Pa.), Shenandoah ValleyP.S. (Va.),S.I.G.H.T.S. (Pa.) andTopton Action andPractical Shooters(Pa.). Each club agreedto cover a stage for theentire match in returnfor match entries andhotel rooms. This providedus with consistentofficiating on eachstage because thesame people werethere for the entirematch. This, combinedwith detailed writtenwalk-throughs, meantthe stages were runthe same way for theentire match. Eachand every squad hadthe same walk-through read to them and thesame interpretation of thestage. With a matchthat has 15 to 20 shooters in asquad, it seems the waitingdominates the shooting. Withfive-shooter squads we wereclearing the ranges in 37-1/2minutes. A few of the shootersfelt a little rushed at times, butwe had very few back-ups. Onlywhen a shooter shot the activationeye-bolt off a popper did wehave a back-up, while we installeda larger eye-bolt in placeof the damaged one. This successful operationwas the result of teamwork betweenthe clubs and the administrativeofficials. The clubshave already been listed but Iwant to thank the following keypeople who made it happen:Mitzi Davis - Assistant MatchDirector and grunt worker;Greg Bookout, Jim Wang, andJerry Wisecarver - Range Masters;Ed Jones - Range Warden;Matthew Fox - Stats God; MarshallWilliams -Chrono; and WilliamC. Vincent - scoresheettransportation. The stages consistedof eight speedshoots and five fieldcourses. The stagesranged from 8 roundsto 40 rounds and wereall Comstock-scored.Again, we felt that theshooters wanted theability to shoot andsolve the challengesposed by the courses intheir own manner. Wehad more speed shootsbecause we wanted tobalance the shooters'ability to shoot withtheir ability to move. With matches that areheavy with fieldcourses, physical abilitycan be more importantthan shooting.Still, the field coursesSeptember/October 1996 Page 21
