WelcomeHeld under the Patr<strong>on</strong>age of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the United Arab Emiratesrepresented by the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Transport Authority and its strategic partners, will hostthe <str<strong>on</strong>g>Road</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Safety</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Four</strong> C<strong>on</strong>tinents C<strong>on</strong>ference between 28–30 March 2010 in its 15th editi<strong>on</strong>,and as such will become the first Middle East and Arab country to host this importantc<strong>on</strong>ference.From the first c<strong>on</strong>ference in 1987 until today, RS4C has been organised by the SwedishNati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>Road</str<strong>on</strong>g> and Transport Research Institute (<strong>VTI</strong>) in coordinati<strong>on</strong> with supportinginternati<strong>on</strong>al establishments and organisati<strong>on</strong>s and in cooperati<strong>on</strong> with the host countries.RS4C is a series of major internati<strong>on</strong>al c<strong>on</strong>ferences <strong>on</strong> road safety and the c<strong>on</strong>ference was heldfor the first time in 1987 with the emphasis <strong>on</strong> two c<strong>on</strong>tinents - Europe and North America.Africa joined for the first time in the 2000 c<strong>on</strong>ference in South Africa and Asia joined forthe first time in the Bangkok 2007 c<strong>on</strong>ference. The c<strong>on</strong>ference therefore now covers fourc<strong>on</strong>tinents - Europe, North America, Africa and Asia. Although the c<strong>on</strong>ference focused <strong>on</strong> the fourc<strong>on</strong>tinents, previous c<strong>on</strong>ferences also included South American and Australian participati<strong>on</strong>.The last two editi<strong>on</strong>s were highly successful in terms of attracting internati<strong>on</strong>al research bodiesand the most prominent internati<strong>on</strong>al experts involved in road safety as well as decisi<strong>on</strong>-makersfrom various parts of the world (representing 50 countries from 6 c<strong>on</strong>tinents).The close relati<strong>on</strong>s between the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Transport Authority and internati<strong>on</strong>al organisati<strong>on</strong>sc<strong>on</strong>cerned with road safety, the Authority’s recent intensive involvement in the internati<strong>on</strong>alarena and in view of the UAE’s regi<strong>on</strong>al and internati<strong>on</strong>al profile, The Nati<strong>on</strong>al TransportAuthority were delighted to be awarded the opportunity to host the 15th editi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ference.The importance of road safety and triggered by the numbers of deaths resulting from roadaccidents, which the latest statistics by internati<strong>on</strong>al organisati<strong>on</strong>s ranks as third in the causesof death after wars and epidemics, not to menti<strong>on</strong> the potential disabilities, deformities and lossof property as a result of these accidents, was a deciding factor in the NTA’s desire to host thec<strong>on</strong>ference in the U.A.E.Dr. Nasser Saif Al MansooriDirector General NTAChairman of Nati<strong>on</strong>al Organising Committee
