S&S® CRANKCASE BREATHER REED VALVE FOR 1984-'99 BIG TWIN ENGINESAcouple of years ago S&S introduced aninexpensive and highly effective crankcasebreather reed valve for Harley-Davidson® TwinCam 88® engines. It was so successful in reducing oilcarryover in Twin Cam 88 engines that we are nowoffering a crankcase breather reed valve for Evolution®big twin* engines. Tests have shown it to be just aseffective in reducing oil carryover as its counterpart forTwin Cam 88 engines.Breather Reed ValveUS PatentPendingThe new S&S breather reed valve for 1984-'99 big twins replacesthe standard rotary breather valve. Installation is fast and simple.Remove the original breather gear and insert the new S&S reedvalve assembly into the breather valve cavity. No aligning timingmarks, and no rotating parts. The S&S crankcase breather reedvalve can be used to replace the stock style rotary breather valvein engines with minor breather cavity damage, and there is a+.030” oversized reed valve for engines with heavily damagedbreather bores.Unlike the rotary breather valve that has been used in big twinengines since the 1930’s, the S&S crankcase breather reed valveis not dependent on the rotation of the crankshaft to make itopen and close. Therefore the opening and closing times are notdetermined by crankshaft position. Instead, the reeds open whenthe pressure in the crankcase becomes greater than the pressure inthe cam chest. The reeds then close when the pressure in the camchest is equal to or greater than the pressure in the crankcase. Thedifference in the way these breather valves function is importantbecause the ideal breather timing actually changes with rpm andthe condition of the engine. By opening and closing “on demand”the reed valves automatically compensate for the lag timeassociated with accelerating the mass of air as it is forced out ofthe crankcase. This is most significant at high rpm when the timeavailable to get the air out is the shortest. In addition, “on demand”operation allows reed valves to accommodate greater amounts ofcompression blow-by. Installation of the S&S crankcase breatherreed valve has actually stopped high rpm oil carryover in testengines with marginal piston ring seal.HOW DOES IT WORK?The functional part of the S&S crankcase breather reed valve consistsof three steel reeds that are normally in the closed position. Whenthe pistons travel downward in the cylinders, the air in the crankcaseis compressed and pressure in the crankcase below the pistonsincreases. This pressure causes the reeds to open, allowing the airand oil mist in the crankcase to escape into the cam chest. Whenthe pistons change direction and begin traveling back upward in thecylinders, a vacuum is created in the crankcase. The vacuum causesthe reeds to close, preventing air from entering the crankcase.
