Sport & ActivitiesYEAR 8 TENNIS v NCA much improved performance sawthe A team triumph in their first winof the season, with the Bs narrowlylosing. Callum Marning playedexceptionally well, winning his singles6-0. Ben Maynard was impressive,winning his singles 6-2, and alsowinning his doubles with partnerNick Raine. – Mr Stuart CampbellYEAR 9The As struggled without two of theirtop players, which meant Jack McKaymoved up to play his first match ofthe season. The As fought hard, butmuch to their disappointment lost bythree games. A great performanceby Tyrell Thompson should not gounmentioned. He won his singles 6-2in position number two, which is agreat win for someone who normallyplays number four. The Bs repaid thefavour by winning the day by onlythree games, although some forfeitsmay have helped them along the way.The Cs and Ds had no luck and bothlost. James Whittering had a close,hard fought match, eventually winning7-6 in position C2 as opposed to C4.Outstanding efforts of the roundgoes to Tyrell Thompson and MihirChipalkatty, who both won all three oftheir matches. – Mr Zach BaulchYEAR 10The As had a very good win, 43games to 18 games. Once again, JackMarning and Cooper Barns won allthree of their matches. The Bs lost byfour games – 34 games to 38 games.Matt Thomas had a convincing 6-1win against his opponent. The Cswon by 41 games to 37. AlexanderLeathem won 7-5 and Garrett won6-0 in their singles matches. The Dshad their first win of the year, 38games to 30. Matthew Stower andSebastian McCullough won all threeof their matches. A special mentionmust go to Jeremy Villarosa forwinning his first ever tennis match atGPS level. – Mr Alan CampbellYEAR 11The Year 11 teams were not only upagainst tough opponents in NudgeeCollege, but also had to face wetand slippery court conditions. TheAs went down, but the score didnot reflect the quality of tennis.Jordan Black played his best tennisof the season, producing three tightand impressive sets. His doublespartner, Charlie Mayne, also had atight singles match, going down 5-7.Brady Young produced some greatpoints throughout the day and wasunlucky not to come up with a winafter having deuce in nearly everygame. The Bs were defeated, butthey had some great clashes. Everyweek Axel Rice has a tough battlewith his opposition. This week he wassuccessful to produce a 6-3 win. Welldone Axel, your persistence has paidoff. Caelan Rafferty and Tom Michelplayed well in their first doublesmatch. They structured points welland showed consistency, but unluckilywent down 5-7. There was a bit ofa mix up with the start time for theC team, so not all sets were played.Unfortunately they did not come outwinners. Jeremy Gillett played someamazing shots, hanging in there to theend, only to be defeated 5-7. DeclanMcDonald and Jeremy Gillett pairedfor the doubles and had anotherclose encounter. Well done boys, youshould be proud. – Miss Sindy PerremSECONDSNudgee proved to be too good onthe day, winning 12 sets, 74 gamesto one set, 24 games. In singles,IGS found the damp conditions andsuperior skill of their opponentsdifficult to compete against, with onlyConnor O’Neill taking a well-deservedfirst set 6-2. Both doubles pairingslost in straight sets, although somefine tennis was demonstrated. Thesportsmanship and fighting spirit wasexemplary. – Mr Mike DixonFIRSTSUpon arrival at Nudgee a shower ofrain set play back an hour or so. Thehope of starting at 9.30 came to betrue, and with only two courts dry weplayed the reverse doubles first. LiamDavenport and Blake Ellis losing in twotight sets were followed by a loss toNicholas Allum and David Earley. Asthe day went on the humidity roseand made it a challenge to play singlesas Liam Davenport went down instraight sets, alongside Nicholas Allumand David Earley. Blake Ellis was theonly person to win his singles. WithNudgee’s rush to finish the day wewent on to play the final doubles withlittle to no break. Nicholas Allum andDavid Earley lost again in straights.Liam and Blake played a tight firstset to go down in a tie-breaker fromwhich Nudgee forfeited the rest of thematch and won seven rubbers to one.– Liam Davenport
