From The HeadmasterINDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF THEMEN OF GRAMMARAn important aspect of ouranniversary in 2013 is recognisingour school’s role and position inthe wider Ipswich community. Thisweek a number of special guestsjoined in our 150-year celebrations.The ‘indomitable spirit’ of IpswichGrammar School students wasmentioned by our guest speaker atthis week’s school assembly.Former Headmaster Mr Igor Lapais well positioned to comment onthe qualities of our young men.In his address to the students, MrLapa commented favourably onthe character of IGS students andspecifically the values of honestyand integrity. Mr Lapa is wellqualified to speak about our school.He attended Brisbane Boys’ Collegeand in 1958 graduated from theUniversity of Queensland with adegree in History and French.That same year, he successfullyapplied for a History teachingposition at IGS, which hecommenced in 1959. In 1961, agedjust 23, he was given the ambitiousjob of leading the History andFrench departments, and quicklyearned a reputation for his abilityto make the study of Historyinteresting and relevant.In 1972, he was promoted byHeadmaster Alan Ladley fromAssistant Master to Senior Master(Deputy Headmaster in today’sterminology), and for the next 17years Igor Lapa and Alan Ladleyoperated as a dynamic workingpartnership, leading the schoolthrough an enormous period ofexpansion and growth. Followingthe sudden death of Alan Ladleyat the end of 1989, Igor Lapa wasappointed Headmaster of IGS, aposition that he occupied from 1990until his retirement in 2000.His association with IGS had lasted 42years. Putting that into perspective, Iwould have to work at IGS until I am90 to match that record! As well as MrLapa’s presence, we were honouredto have current Principals of otherindependent and Catholic schoolsattend (pictured) our assembly. DrPeter Britton required no introductionas he is the current Principal of oursister school, Ipswich Girls’ GrammarSchool. He is also a former parent ofIGS with his son James completing hisschooling in 2009.Mr Geoff McLay is Principal of WestMoreton Anglican College. He hasheld that position since September2010. Mr McLay has held previousPrincipal positions at schools inVictoria and Queensland and has anIGS connection as his wife Kate livedat the school for a number of yearswhen her father was a BoardingMaster at IGS.Mrs Deidre Young has been thePrincipal of St Mary’s in Ipswichsince 2009. Her career has largelyconcentrated on girls’ educationand St Mary’s is also celebrating 150years in 2013.Unfortunately Mr Brendan Lawler,Principal of St Edmund’s College,was unavailable, as was mypredecessor, Mr Denis Frederiksen,who will once again join the IpswichGrammar community at a futureassembly. Some excellent dancingfrom our indigenous students,quality music from our young menand the playing of a scene fromour recent musical added to thesignificance of the occasion.Yours sincerely,Mr Robert HendersonHeadmaster/CEO
