‘It is the RED dress that I saw.’<br />
This conforms to Re<strong>in</strong>hart’s (1995) <strong>and</strong> Neeleman & Re<strong>in</strong>hart’s<br />
(1998) theory of focus <strong>wh</strong>ereby extra stress can be assigned to an<br />
element without remov<strong>in</strong>g the stress assigned by the Nuclear<br />
Stress Rule. 3 This follows from the Stress Strengthen<strong>in</strong>g Rule. 4<br />
As a result the orig<strong>in</strong>al ma<strong>in</strong> stress becomes secondary. Neeleman<br />
& Re<strong>in</strong>hart (1998) give the follow<strong>in</strong>g k<strong>in</strong>d of example<br />
(p.335):<br />
(28) Only MAX can afford buy<strong>in</strong>g cars.<br />
The difference between (27) <strong>and</strong> (28), however, is that <strong>wh</strong>ereas<br />
<strong>in</strong> (28) the entity that receives secondary stress does not have to<br />
be discourse-l<strong>in</strong>ked, <strong>in</strong> (27) forema (‘dress’) has to be discoursel<strong>in</strong>ked.<br />
If a speaker says ‘It is the RED dress that I saw’, then a<br />
set of dresses is obligatorily part of the background/common<br />
ground.<br />
Another problem with Androutsopoulou’s analysis has to do<br />
with agreement. As is well-known, <strong>in</strong> languages like French,<br />
DPs with combien can split (cf. Obenauer 1976, 1983, 1994).<br />
