English IntensiveProgram (EIP)English is the language of instruction at Concordia International School in Hanoi. As an internationalschool with a richly diverse population, many of our students do not speak English as their firstlanguage and may require support to aid in their acquisition of English. To meet the learning needsof these students, Concordia International School in Hanoi offers a comprehensive and dynamicEnglish as an Additional Language (EAL) program. Our EAL program is divided into three sections:English INtensive Program (Grades 1-5 only)Students join an Intensive English classroom for 1-3 semesters, depending on the child’s speed oflanguage learning. This classroom is a multi-age combination of grades 1-2, and a class of studentsgrades 3-5. Students concentrate on acquiring basic English necessary to be successful in the regularclassroom. In addition to receiving all-day, focused English instruction that is tailored to meet theirspecific needs, students participate in Art, Music, and Physical Education classes with our traditionalprogram students. There are a limited number of seats available in each grade of our EnglishIntensive Program.Traditional Program with EAL (Grades 1-8)Once students reach the Intermediate Fluency level, they are enrolled into their age appropriategrade level classroom. The majority of the learning day is spent fully integrated into the traditionalprogram classroom. Based on their needs, for a portion of the day, students attend an EAL class witha specialist teacher to focus on building their academic English. Their regular classroom teacherprovides differentiated support to help students continue to acquire English. In order to providea English-language rich environment for all students, we limit the number of EAL students in ourtraditional program.Traditional Program without EALOnce students reach the Advanced Fluency level, they no longer attend special EAL classes, but aremonitored for 1-2 years to ensure that they are progressing in acquiring English. It is normal for astudent entering the Traditional Program without EAL to be below grade level in some subjects, butwithin one to two years, the student should be able to achieve or exceed grade level expectations inall areas.AssessmentAll students are assessed for placement in the school. This pre-entry testing has speaking, listening, reading, and writing language components that assist the school in determining the approximatelevel of English proficiency. Following acceptance into Concordia, the student’s language proficiencyis further assessed through classroom participation and an additional language proficiencyassessment appropriate to their grade level. Students in the EAL program will be regularly assessedto determine student growth and advancement through the phases of the EAL program. If you have more questions about the English Intensive Program (EIP) please contact theConcordia Admissions Office (admissions@concordiahanoi.org)17www.concordiahanoi.org18
