Tubes, pipes and scaffoldingStructural tube – a shorthistoryOBITUARYBruce Shaw16 February 1948 –11 September 2008We are deeply saddened to advisethe passing onto a higher order ofBruce Shaw, the Quality AssuranceManager of T & E, an AffiliateMember of this Association.Bruce had kidney failure some5 years ago. His wife, Anne,donated a compatible kidney whichimproved his quality of life for thepast 4 years, but unfortunately hesuccumbed to secondary illness dueto immune system depression.Structural Tube has been manufacturedand used in structural applications formany years. Probably the biggest breakthrough in the use of tube in SouthAfrica took place in June 1997 whengraded Structural Tube, Structatube 300,was made readily available. The need tolaunch Structatube 300 was identified inthe early 1990. This initiative wascoordinated by the South AfricanInstitute of Steel Construction and themembers of the Association of SteelTube and Pipe Manufacturers of SouthAfrica that produced Structural Tube.Structatube 300, could be defined asstructural hollow sections that is madefrom input material that conforms toSANS 1431 300WA grade of steel. Inaccordance with 300WA the steel has aminimum yield stress of 300MPa.Previously the tube was manufacturedfrom various commercial quality gradeswhich did not have guaranteedmechanical properties.In many cases engineers were thereforereluctant to specify Structural Tube.When the graded steel tube waslaunched it not only gave the engineersconfidence to design in tube but moreimportantly made tube morecompetitive. The higher strengthresulted in thinner sections thereforemore completive sizes being specifiedand used. Since the launch of gradedsteel the usage has more than doubledover the last ten years.Going forward the tube industry isaiming to making grade S355, tube witha minimum of 355MPa yield, thestandard for structural application. Thiswill put Structural Tube back in line withother structural section and thereforemore competitive. Trials are currentlyunderway. The industry is hoping tolaunch this grade of steel for tubewithin the next 6 months. With the priceof steel having increased significantlyover the last 4 to 5 years the typicalmass savings using tube will become abigger factor in deciding the profiles tobe used. The mass saving, specificallyin compression or torsion applicationusing tube can be as high as 40 to 50%.The Association wishes to thank Franco Mordini– Marketing Director, Robor Steel Services, forthis contribution.Bruce worked diligently andwithout favour for 16 1 /2 years atT&E. During this time he built up aQ.A. department which was theenvy of clients and competitorsalike.
