Bill Garvieworked with Walter Barnett atRietfontein Galvanizers in Johannesburgfor many years prior to starting thisventure together with his partners, EricGenders and Geoffrey Gass.The company has a reputation ofproducing some of the best quality inthe industry, a fact of which theshareholders are very proud. Theindustry has also taken note of thesehigh standards responding with anumber of awards from the annual HotDip Galvanizing Awards event.Although there were doubts about theproject’s chances of success, the threemen persevered with their visionstarting with a 6,5m long bath inMundt Street, Waltloo.Production started in September 1983with a single shift and in 2002 adouble shift was added to cater forincreased demand. Sadly by then Bill’spartners had unexpectedly passedaway. Bill continued to run the planttogether with a capable team ofmanagers and a well-trained workforceuntil he retired late in 2005.The company was bought out by anMBO headed by Mrs. Heike van Eijden,who took over as managing director.Galvadip, has since rapidly expandedwith a third shift and secondgalvanizing line of 7.0m x 2.5m x 1.5m.Both lines are now working a 24-hourshift and tonnage has tripled.
