5THE STORY OF A SMALL PIONEER -FROM BABY STEPS TO THE NEXT BIG STEP!One of our first residents prepares for theimportant milestone of enter<strong>in</strong>g primaryschool...When the Els family – Albert (dad),J’ruida (mom) and six-month-old Jarno– moved <strong>in</strong>to Midstream early <strong>in</strong> 2004,the Estate was still <strong>in</strong> its fledgl<strong>in</strong>g stage.Their houseat Hutton Gate was surroundedby a cluster of five houses andveld, with the school (<strong>in</strong> various stagesof development) as well as jackal andother wildlife as their closest neighbours.The shopp<strong>in</strong>g centre, churchesand other parts of <strong>Midrand</strong> <strong>Estates</strong>were futuristic notions.In January of 2005, Jarnojo<strong>in</strong>ed the first ever class <strong>in</strong> theMidstream Pre-Primary School.It was here that he took hisfirst “momentous” steps on hisfirst birthday (which J’ruida wasfortunate to witness). Anotherof the family’s favourite memoriesis of a fun walk held by theschool. As the walkways hadnot yet been developed, the carpark served as the course. As most of the children were toosmall to participate, they enjoyed the day’s activities fromthe comfort of their prams whilst the moms and dads did allthe walk<strong>in</strong>g!Jarno has progressed through the ranks of pre-primary school, dur<strong>in</strong>g which time littlebrother Jensen (now three years old) has been welcomed <strong>in</strong>to the family. Now a sixyearold <strong>in</strong> the ‘Sebra’ class, Jarno enjoys swimm<strong>in</strong>g, mounta<strong>in</strong> bik<strong>in</strong>g and play<strong>in</strong>gtennis with his family. He is excited about go<strong>in</strong>g to Grade 1 next year so that hecan learn to read, wrestle and play cricket. Of course,he fully <strong>in</strong>tends to cont<strong>in</strong>ue with his career <strong>in</strong> BulletjieRugby!2011 will be a big year for the family. When Jarno putson his new school shoes, he and his family will havejust moved <strong>in</strong>to their newly built house <strong>in</strong> Midfieldand will be anticipat<strong>in</strong>g the arrivalof a baby sister towards the end ofJanuary.Jarno is just one of a number of childrenwho share <strong>in</strong> the history of theEstate. We wish these special littlepioneer<strong>in</strong>g residents all the best asthey enter Grade 1!
