A Brief History of Italian Heritage and Culture MonthSponsored by the Italian Heritage and CultureCommittee – NY, Inc. (IHCC-NY, Inc.)New York’s Italian Heritage and Culture Month willbe celebrating its thirty-seventh anniversary this year,2013. The Italian Heritage and Culture Committee ofNew York, Inc. (IHCC-NY, Inc.) has provided morethan three and one-half decades of special events,concerts, exhibits, lectures, and proclamations tocelebrate and to better inform New York, the largestItalian city outside Italy, and other geographic areasthroughout the United States and the world, of the importantlegacy of Italian and Italian American culture.It is important to recognize from a historical perspectivethat in the spring of 1976, NYC Mayor AbrahamBeame, proclaimed the first “Italian Culture Week,”from May 17 to 23. The idea for such progress wasproposed to Dr. Leo Bernardo, Director of the Bureauof Foreign Languages, who was easily persuaded ofthe value and importance of this project. Dr. Bernardoappointed Dr. Angelo Gimondo as citywidecoordinator, resulting in the first celebration of ItalianCulture Week under the auspices of the Bureauof Foreign Languages of the Board of Education ofthe City of New York. Nine years later, in 1985, thefestivities moved to October, to coincide with variousColumbus Day celebrations. By then, a week had becometoo short to encompass the range of programsso the week was transformed to “Italian Heritage andCulture Month.” As the years passed, the Governorof the State of New York and the President of theUnited States joined in acknowledging this significantannual celebration in issuing proclamations inrecognition of the heritage and culture of Italians andItalian Americans.This pioneering month long celebration was conceptualizedby Dr. Gimondo, then President of the ItalianBilingual Educators Association and Superintendentof School District 30 in the Borough of Queens,NYC.
