The NIAID budgetfor fiscal year 2012 is approximately $4.5 billion. Heserves as one of the key advisors to the White Houseand Department of Health and Human Services onglobal AIDS issues, and on initiatives to bolster medicaland public health preparedness against emerginginfectious disease threats such as pandemic influenza.In addition, he has pioneered the field of human immunoregulationby making a number of basic scientificobservations that serve as the basis for currentunderstanding of the regulation of the human immuneresponse, and is widely recognized for delineating the23
