01Water loss results from the urine produced in the kidneys, the process ofexhalation, the sweat from the skin and elimination of feces. Water loss iswhat conditions the water intakes that should be made, so that intakesoffset the water loss, and an excess of water does not build up, but iseliminated by an increase in kidney activity.Of the intakes, metabolic water represents the water produced in theoxidation processes when macronutrients oxidize to produce energy(hydric performance). The water in food and beverages comes frommany sources, but the foods that provide a larger amount of water arefruit and vegetables, as well as cooked foods with a high water content(soups, broths, purées…) and beverage sources of water can includetap water, packaged water, herb teas, coffee, caloric and non-caloric softdrinks, juices and nectars, beverages for sportspeople, shakes, etc.n The largest volume of water losses are through the kidneys andcan be estimated at some 1,500 ml/person/day. These losses aredistinguished as:lObligatory renal losses which are necessary for excreting certainhydrosoluble substances that have to be eliminated (urea, uricacid, minerals ingested in excess…).lFacultative renal losses which refer to water that has beeningested and that exceeds the body’s water requirements so it hasto be eliminated.n Cutaneous losses are distinguished as losses through sweat andcutaneous insensible losses (perspiratio insensibilis).lLosses through sweat that take place as a result of sudoriparoussecretion. The function of sweating is to put body water on thesurface of the skin so that it can evaporate, preventing the bodytemperature from reaching undesirable levels and keeping thebody at its right functional level. In certain conditions, sweatingmay be very important and may reach very high volume, depending on factors such as high environmental temperature, high environmental humidity, physical exercise, clothes and fever.12
