Nestled in the Appalachian foothills isStaats Mill Covered Bridge visible from Cedar Lakes. Elizabeth is home to the Wirt County Courthouse, a Neoclassical Revival-stylestructure built in 1913, with white Greek columns and a bell that sits atop and rings on the hour. Parkersburg offers dramaticneighborhoods of splendid 19th century mansions, a former Carnegie Library complete with spiral stairs, wooden shelves, and glassfloors, and the nearby Blennerhassett Island, its rebuilt 1802 mansion and ten millennia of Indian habitation reachable only bysternwheeler. Just upriver is century-old Fenton Glass with thousands of square feet of factory floor, huge glass furnaces, and riversof molten glass. The river in this area is dotted with dozens of wooded islands. The 72-mile North Bend Rail Trail has a dozen intactrailroad tunnels.
