Community ProfilesRegion 5 - Mountain LakesCounties: Braxton, Clay, Gilmer, Lewis, Nicholas, Upshur, WebsterProfileMan-made lakes created by flooding long valleys create miles of irregular shoreline and require a collection of unique damssurrounded by forested mountains. The lakes are large and some remarkably deep, which, utilizing “movie magic”, could simulatedeep-sea diving adventures. There are rural communities, abundant farmland, and homesteads complete with horses and wagonsbringing in the hay. There are waterfalls and Civil War battlefields. The site of the 2001 World Whitewater Rafting Championships, oneof the most incredible experiences in whitewater rafting is the Gauley Season, when millions of gallons of water is released into thewild, rapid-filled Gauley River every September, bringing rafters from around the world for the thrill of careening between rocky cliffs.Like everywhere else in the state, the dominant feature of the landscape is mountains. Architectural wonders include the pictureperfectcollege campus of West Virginia Wesleyan with its dominant chapel and brick structures; the brooding, hand carved stonebehemoth of the former Weston State Hospital (more than 202,000 square feet), a national historical landmark constructed in 1881-1888; and the working mill on Stonewall Jackson’s former home place.Connector Cities from Flatwoods: Pittsburgh-160 miles; Columbus-277 milesRegional Highlights• Summersville Dam, the second largest rock fill dam east ofthe Mississippi River• French Creek, home of the West Virginia Wildlife Centerand French Creek Freddie, the famed groundhog• Stonewall Resor t and surrounding Stonewall Jackson StatePark, offers luxury accommodations, 14,000 square feet ofconference space, lakeside cottages, spa services, andoutdoor recreation, including an Arnold Palmer 18-holechampionship golf course• Landmark Studio for the Arts, a converted historicVictorian-era church supporting visual and performing artsactivities for local communities and schools in BraxtonCounty and is home to the WV Filmmakers Film Festivalevery fall• Glenville State College, known affectionately as theLighthouse on the Hill, the campus consists of 28 buildingson 30 acres and a wide variety of wooded propertiesacross 325 acres37
