The lakes are large and some remarkably deep, which, utilizing “movie magic”, could simulatedeep-sea diving adventures. There are rural communities, abundant farmland, and homesteads complete with horses and wagonsbringing in the hay. There are waterfalls and Civil War battlefields. The site of the 2001 World Whitewater Rafting Championships, oneof the most incredible experiences in whitewater rafting is the Gauley Season, when millions of gallons of water is released into thewild, rapid-filled Gauley River every September, bringing rafters from around the world for the thrill of careening between rocky cliffs.Like everywhere else in the state, the dominant feature of the landscape is mountains.
