Tens of thousands of acres of forestedmountains are captured in the Monongahela National Forest with endless miles of true wilderness absent of human habitation. Dozensof peaks surpass 3,000 feet piercing the clouds and are often decorated with lacy fog and technicolor sunsets. Sub-Arctic climes leftbehind after the last Ice Age continue to thrive, providing rare vegetation and animal habitats, including red spruce stands with limbson only one side and bogs filled with orchids and carnivorous plants. Boardwalks make bogs and skyscraper-size boulder citiesaccessible. Miles of mountainsides blaze with fall colors while highland meadows boast multi-colored wildflower blankets. There arecountless waterfalls, clear streams, historic timber towns, unique rock formations, numerous caves, and locations for everythingfrom hang gliding and mountain biking to rock climbing. The railroad and timber town of Elkins boasts fabulous period mansions andthe world-famous Augusta Heritage Festival which brings performers from around the world all summer long.
