RIVM Report 703719064At Weesperkarspel, water from the Bethune polder, an area where upwardseepage <strong>of</strong> groundwater (exfiltration) occurs, is abstracted for dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g waterproduction. Before water is transported to the storage reservoir, it hasundergone coagulation. In summer periods, water from the Amsterdam Rh<strong>in</strong>ecanal can also be used but this was not the case <strong>in</strong> 2009. The detected DOA <strong>in</strong>the raw water <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water (phenobarbital <strong>and</strong> barbital) show acomparable pattern with the Bethune polder water <strong>and</strong> not with the AmsterdamRh<strong>in</strong>e canal water, where eight different DOA were detected (MDMA, BE,oxazepam, temazepam, code<strong>in</strong>e, methadone, pentobarbital <strong>and</strong> phenobarbital).The rapid s<strong>and</strong> filtration at Loenderveen <strong>and</strong> ozonation <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>ten<strong>in</strong>g,biologically activated carbon filtration <strong>and</strong> slow s<strong>and</strong> filtration employed atWeesperkarspel do not completely remove all barbiturates: althoughphenobarbital is removed, barbital is still present <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water.Barbital, a tranquilizer that is no longer available as a prescription drug, was theonly compound that was detected at the dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water production site De Punt(Gron<strong>in</strong>gen), which uses <strong>surface</strong> water from the river Drentsche Aa as sourcewater. This compound was observed to be present <strong>in</strong> the river Drentsche Aa (7ng/L) <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the raw water (8 ng/L). In the f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water barbital wasdetected but <strong>in</strong> a concentration too low to quantify (LOD). Theactivated carbon filtration that is performed apparently does not completelyremove this compound 2 .Dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water production sites us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>surface</strong> water <strong>and</strong> soil aquiferrechargeFigures 3.6 to 3.10 show the results for the dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water production sites thatproduce dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water from <strong>surface</strong> water us<strong>in</strong>g soil aquifer recharge. It has tobe stressed that these figures are based on only one sampl<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> time, theresults should therefore be regarded as <strong>in</strong>dicative. Except for the production site<strong>of</strong> Heel, where water from the Lateraalkanaal (river Meuse) is temporarily stored<strong>in</strong> a reservoir then bank filtrated <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ally re-abstracted, the <strong>in</strong>filtration areas<strong>in</strong>volved are located along the coastl<strong>in</strong>e (dunes). The pretreated river water istransported to these dune areas, where it is <strong>in</strong>filtrated after pre-treatment <strong>and</strong>re-abstracted. After subsoil passage, the re-abstracted water is treated mostlyby ozone (except at Ouddorp <strong>and</strong> Scheven<strong>in</strong>gen), followed by activated carbon.When compar<strong>in</strong>g the monitor<strong>in</strong>g results <strong>of</strong> the raw water <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>gwater, the only compound that was detected <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water isphenobarbital at Scheven<strong>in</strong>gen. Apparently, the activated carbon filtration at thissite is not effective <strong>in</strong> completely remov<strong>in</strong>g this compound. Besidesphenobarbital, all raw <strong>waters</strong> <strong>of</strong> Leidu<strong>in</strong>, Haamstede, Ouddorp <strong>and</strong> Scheven<strong>in</strong>genconta<strong>in</strong> detectable levels <strong>of</strong> the benzodiazep<strong>in</strong>es oxazepam <strong>and</strong> temazepam, butthe benzodiazep<strong>in</strong>es are not present <strong>in</strong> the f<strong>in</strong>ished dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water.2 An additional sampl<strong>in</strong>g was performed by order <strong>of</strong> waterbedrijf Gron<strong>in</strong>gen at the dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water productionsite De Punt on January 17 th , 2011. Water samples from the river Drentsche Aa, raw water <strong>and</strong> f<strong>in</strong>isheddr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g were analysed for 6 barbiturates, none <strong>of</strong> which could be quantified (all concentrations
