7 Additional Glyphs <strong>for</strong> the <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 <strong>Character</strong> <strong>Collection</strong>This section contains a catalog of the 6,090 glyphs which, when added tothose in Sections 3 through 6 (Supplements 0 through 3), comprise the<strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 character collection. Thus, this section illustrates the glyphs<strong>for</strong> <strong>CID</strong>s 9354 through 15443 only; the complete <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 charactercollection consists of glyphs identified by <strong>CID</strong>s 0 through 15443.Supplement 4 includes the additional glyphs needed to support vertical writingin the context of OpenType (through the ‘vrt2’ GSUB feature), specificallypre-rotated <strong>for</strong>ms of all half-width and proportional glyphs found inSupplements 0 through 2.7.1 Special NotesNote that the glyphs <strong>for</strong> <strong>CID</strong>s 12220 through 12227 are intended to be decorativein nature, and thus can vary from typeface to typeface, and from typefoundry to type foundry. The glyphs <strong>for</strong> this range of eight <strong>CID</strong>s merely illustratewhat are used in the Kozuka Mincho typeface design.7.2 <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 Design ObjectivesIn order to satisfy the needs of professional and commercial printing inJapan, a wide variety of character and glyph sets were studied. Theseincluded common vendor extensions, proprietary glyph sets, common “Gaiji”sets, and other Japanese character sets. <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 is not intended to bea “Gaiji Solution,” but rather is designed to meet most of the professional andcommercial printing needs in Japan. Put simply, the <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 charactercollection is specifically designed to allow very sophisticated users tocompose complex documents, with a minimum use of “Gaiji” fonts.7.3 <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 & OpenTypeMany of the glyphs in <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 are unencoded on most operating systems,and will most likely continue to be unencoded. This is why <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 fonts cannot fully function without additional technology thatenables advanced typographic features. OpenType, with its GSUB (GlyphSubstitution) and GPOS (Glyph Positioning) tables, provides <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 with the power to enable access to its glyphs.7.4 <strong>Adobe</strong>-<strong>Japan1</strong>-4 Technical DetailsIn order to ensure glyph consistency across fonts of different manufacturers,the JIS X 0208:1997 kanji (<strong>CID</strong>s 1125–7477 and 8284–8285 of Supplements0 and 1, respectively) must become JIS90-compliant.
