4.1 Reflections on<br />
Teaching During <strong>2009</strong><br />
The <strong>Faculty</strong> continued to support<br />
excellence in education by providing<br />
high quality Teaching. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen<br />
Barkoczy was Director <strong>of</strong> Teaching<br />
throughout <strong>2009</strong>. Ms Joanna Becker,<br />
the Manager – Education Services<br />
and Mr Lloyd England, the Manager –<br />
Student Experience continued to provide<br />
support for the portfolio <strong>of</strong> the Director <strong>of</strong><br />
Teaching.<br />
4.2 Teaching Awards<br />
<strong>Faculty</strong> Teaching Awards – worth<br />
$1000 each were awarded to<br />
• Dr Adam McBeth – Early Career<br />
Teacher Award<br />
• Mr Lloyd England and Mr Jason Harkess<br />
– Sessional Teacher Award<br />
• Dr Paula Gerber – <strong>Faculty</strong> Teacher<br />
Award.<br />
External Teaching Awards – The Prato<br />
Program was nominated for, and won,<br />
a <strong>2009</strong> ALTC (Australian Learning and<br />
Teaching Council) Award for Programs<br />
that Enhance Excellence. This Award<br />
was valued at $25,000 and the team who<br />
wrote the Award application consisted <strong>of</strong><br />
• Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jonathan Clough –<br />
Director International<br />
• Dr Heli Askola – Prato Program<br />
Co-ordinator<br />
• Ms Joanna Becker – Manager<br />
Education Services.<br />
4.3 Teaching Pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
Development<br />
In <strong>2009</strong>, the Director <strong>of</strong> Teaching and<br />
Manager – Education Services conducted<br />
a range <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />
activities for teaching staff including<br />
• Sessional Tutors Orientation<br />
• STEP – Sessional Teaching Excellence<br />
Program<br />
• Mental Health First Aid Training<br />
• <strong>Faculty</strong> Teaching Workshop<br />
• <strong>Faculty</strong> Teaching Seminars.<br />
4.4 The VC’s Showcase<br />
<strong>of</strong> Teaching Excellence<br />
The Manager – Education Services<br />
attended the annual Vice Chancellor’s<br />
Showcase <strong>of</strong> Teaching Excellence on<br />
14th September <strong>2009</strong> which celebrated<br />
Teaching Excellence across the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Mr Ross Hyams presented a session<br />
at this Showcase on “Work Integrated<br />
Learning Opportunities”.<br />
Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Jonathan Clough and Dr Heli Askola receive a <strong>2009</strong> ALTC Program Award from the<br />
then Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard at the Award presentations in Canberra. Ms Joanna Becker, the<br />
other member <strong>of</strong> the team could not attend.<br />
4.5 National Teaching<br />
Presentations<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen Barkoczy, as winner<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 2008 Prime Minister’s Award for<br />
Australian <strong>University</strong> Teacher <strong>of</strong> the Year,<br />
was invited to make several teaching<br />
presentations during the year. This<br />
included the following presentations:<br />
• “Quality Teaching: The Real Benefits”<br />
presented at the Inaugural Higher<br />
Education Conference <strong>2009</strong> in<br />
Canberra (March <strong>2009</strong>).<br />
• “Making Learning More Effective,<br />
Realistic and Engaging” presented<br />
at Swinburne <strong>University</strong> and Deakin<br />
<strong>University</strong> (July <strong>2009</strong>).<br />
4.6 <strong>Faculty</strong> Teaching<br />
Workshop<br />
The Director <strong>of</strong> Teaching and Manager –<br />
Education Services conducted the <strong>Faculty</strong><br />
Teaching Workshop on 9th October <strong>2009</strong><br />
as part <strong>of</strong> the Educate09 activities. Over<br />
forty people attended and the guest<br />
speakers included<br />
• Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Stephen Barkozcy – Director<br />
<strong>of</strong> Teaching – Introduction<br />
• Mr Jeremy King and Mr Luke Pellegrini<br />
from Blake Dawson – What do<br />
employers want to see in our students?<br />
• Mr Michael Beaconsfield and Mr Jason<br />
Bagg from the LSS – What do students<br />
want out <strong>of</strong> their <strong>Law</strong> Course?<br />
4.7 <strong>Faculty</strong> Education<br />
Committee<br />
The <strong>Faculty</strong> Education Committee<br />
chaired by the Director <strong>of</strong> Teaching met<br />
four times during <strong>2009</strong>. New members<br />
invited to join the Committee were<br />
Ms Trish Hughes, the Learning Skills<br />
Advisor and Mr Lloyd England, the<br />
Manager – Student Experience.<br />
4.8 Quality<br />
The <strong>Faculty</strong> continued to work closely<br />
with the Centre for Higher Education<br />
Quality (CHEQ) to conduct the required<br />
evaluations. Unit Evaluations, Teaching<br />
Evaluations and the <strong>Monash</strong> Experience<br />
Questionnaire (MEQ09) were conducted<br />
to help provide systematic feedback<br />
from students about their <strong>University</strong> and<br />
<strong>Faculty</strong> experience.<br />
