4. Teaching
4.1 Reflections on
Teaching During 2009
The Faculty continued to support
excellence in education by providing
high quality Teaching. Professor Stephen
Barkoczy was Director of Teaching
throughout 2009. Ms Joanna Becker,
the Manager – Education Services
and Mr Lloyd England, the Manager –
Student Experience continued to provide
support for the portfolio of the Director of
Teaching.
4.2 Teaching Awards
Faculty Teaching Awards – worth
$1000 each were awarded to
• Dr Adam McBeth – Early Career
Teacher Award
• Mr Lloyd England and Mr Jason Harkess
– Sessional Teacher Award
• Dr Paula Gerber – Faculty Teacher
Award.
External Teaching Awards – The Prato
Program was nominated for, and won,
a 2009 ALTC (Australian Learning and
Teaching Council) Award for Programs
that Enhance Excellence. This Award
was valued at $25,000 and the team who
wrote the Award application consisted of

Education Services.
4.3 Teaching Professional
Development
In 2009, the Director of Teaching and
Manager – Education Services conducted
a range of professional development
activities for teaching staff including
• Sessional Tutors Orientation
• STEP – Sessional Teaching Excellence
Program
• Mental Health First Aid Training
• Faculty Teaching Workshop
• Faculty Teaching Seminars.
4.4 The VC’s Showcase
of Teaching Excellence
The Manager – Education Services
attended the annual Vice Chancellor’s
Showcase of Teaching Excellence on
14th September 2009 which celebrated
Teaching Excellence across the University.
Mr Ross Hyams presented a session
at this Showcase on “Work Integrated
Learning Opportunities”.
Associate Professor Jonathan Clough and Dr Heli Askola receive a 2009 ALTC Program Award from the
then Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard at the Award presentations in Canberra. Ms Joanna Becker, the
other member of the team could not attend.
4.5 National Teaching
Presentations
Professor Stephen Barkoczy, as winner
of the 2008 Prime Minister’s Award for
Australian University Teacher of the Year,
was invited to make several teaching
presentations during the year. This
included the following presentations:
• “Quality Teaching: The Real Benefits”
presented at the Inaugural Higher
Education Conference 2009 in
Canberra (March 2009).
• “Making Learning More Effective,
Realistic and Engaging” presented
at Swinburne University and Deakin
University (July 2009).
4.6 Faculty Teaching
Workshop
The Director of Teaching and Manager –
Education Services conducted the Faculty
Teaching Workshop on 9th October 2009
as part of the Educate09 activities. Over
forty people attended and the guest
speakers included
• Professor Stephen Barkozcy – Director
of Teaching – Introduction
• Mr Jeremy King and Mr Luke Pellegrini
from Blake Dawson – What do
employers want to see in our students?
• Mr Michael Beaconsfield and Mr Jason
Bagg from the LSS – What do students
want out of their Law Course?
4.7 Faculty Education
Committee
The Faculty Education Committee
chaired by the Director of Teaching met
four times during 2009. New members
invited to join the Committee were
Ms Trish Hughes, the Learning Skills
Advisor and Mr Lloyd England, the
Manager – Student Experience.
4.8 Quality
The Faculty continued to work closely
with the Centre for Higher Education
Quality (CHEQ) to conduct the required
evaluations. Unit Evaluations, Teaching
Evaluations and the Monash Experience
Questionnaire (MEQ09) were conducted
to help provide systematic feedback
from students about their University and
Faculty experience.
