O’Week Cocktail Party with Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Law</strong> School Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arie Freiberg AM<br />

9.1 Events<br />

To celebrate the start <strong>of</strong> the academic year<br />

and welcome new students to the faculty<br />

a cocktail function was held in the <strong>Law</strong><br />

Library on Thursday 26 February where<br />

over 300 first year students and their<br />

families joined <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School staff.<br />

The evening was hosted by the Dean,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arie Freiberg AM and included<br />

speakers from the <strong>Law</strong> Students’ Society<br />

and the International <strong>Law</strong> Association.<br />

The evening provided the opportunity<br />

for new students and family members to<br />

meet staff out side <strong>of</strong> the lecture theatre.<br />

Ceremony (Prizes for 2008<br />

academic year)<br />

The <strong>2009</strong> <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School Prize<br />

Ceremony which acknowledges the<br />

achievements, hard work and dedication<br />

2008 Supreme Court Prize Winner, Natalia Blecher<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>Faculty</strong>’s students in 2008 was held<br />

at the ANZ Pavilion at the Victorian Arts<br />

Centre with over 350 guests attending.<br />

<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> alumnus The Honourable<br />

Justice Lex Lasry <strong>of</strong> the Supreme Court<br />

<strong>of</strong> Victoria addressed the audience about<br />

his experiences and his journey from<br />

undergraduate student to the Victorian<br />

Bar and appointment as Queens’<br />

Counsel, through his work in the area<br />

<strong>of</strong> Human Rights cases and his current<br />

appointment as a Supreme Court Justice.<br />

The Honourable Justice Mark Weinberg,<br />

himself a former Supreme Court Prize<br />

Winner, presented Natalia Blecher with<br />

the prestigious Supreme Court Prize.<br />

Natalia also received the Supreme Court<br />

Exhibition Prize for Best Honours Thesis.<br />

Other guests included His Honour Chief<br />

Judge Michael Rozenes and Chief Crown<br />

Prosecutor Gavin Silbert SC.<br />

The faculty had an increase in sponsorship<br />

<strong>2009</strong> and welcomed two new sponsors,<br />

the Department <strong>of</strong> Justice and Maurice<br />

Blackburn <strong>Law</strong>yers, and would like to<br />

thank all <strong>of</strong> our sponsors for their support<br />

<strong>of</strong> this year’s Prize Ceremony.<br />

was Natalia Blecher.<br />

<strong>2009</strong> Great <strong>Law</strong> Week Debate<br />

“They’re not morons:<br />

governments should butt<br />

out <strong>of</strong> young peoples’ lives”<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> the annual <strong>Law</strong> Week<br />

celebrations on Wednesday 13th May<br />

<strong>2009</strong> two teams <strong>of</strong> respected <strong>Monash</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> Graduates debated the controversial<br />

topic “They’re not morons: governments<br />

should butt out <strong>of</strong> young peoples lives.”<br />

The event was held at Melbourne<br />

Exhibition and Convention Centre in the<br />

Auditorium. The debate was moderated<br />

by Cameron Grant, a current <strong>Monash</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> student who did a brilliant job<br />

keeping the audience and debaters on<br />

track throughout the event.<br />

The affirmative team were the winners<br />

as voted by the clapometer and panel<br />

<strong>of</strong> judges from the legal community. The<br />
