Eliezer Rivlin Vice-President <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Supreme Court <strong>of</strong> Israel presented a<br />
lecture on ‘Judging in Israel – Balancing<br />
Contradictions’ at <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />
Chambers. The lecture covered Israel<br />
and the contradicting ideas, differences<br />
<strong>of</strong> beliefs, divergence <strong>of</strong> opinions and<br />
the complex reality in which the state is<br />
constantly required to handle complicated<br />
security challenges.<br />

Peggy Fulton Hora<br />
Held on Tuesday 18 August Judge<br />
Peggy Fulton Hora (retired) presented<br />
a lecture titled ‘The American Drug<br />
Court Movement: A personal Journey’.<br />
Judge Hora spoke on the aspect <strong>of</strong><br />
non-adversarial justice – the solutions –<br />
focussed Drug Courts which have been<br />
a feature <strong>of</strong> American criminal justice<br />
system for the last 20 years. The lecture<br />
was at <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Chambers.<br />
Water and Peace in the Middle East<br />
Gideon Bromberg<br />
This public lecture by Gidon Bromberg,<br />
the Israeli Director and co-founder <strong>of</strong><br />
EcoPeace/Friends <strong>of</strong> the Earth Middle<br />
East (FoEME), was held on Thursday 8<br />
January at the <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong><br />
Chambers.<br />

Kneebone and From Convention to<br />
Classroom: The Long Road to Human<br />
Rights Education by Dr Paula Gerber<br />
Held on Friday 5 June at the Immigration<br />
Museum in Melbourne, two academics,<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Susan Kneebone and Dr Paula<br />
Queens Birthday Honours – Arie recieves medal <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Order <strong>of</strong> Australia (AM)<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arie Freiberg was appointed a Member <strong>of</strong> the Order <strong>of</strong> Australia (AM)<br />
for service to the law, particularly in the fields <strong>of</strong> criminology and reform relating to<br />
sentencing, legal education and academic leadership.<br />
“It’s a great honour to be recognised by one’s community for one’s work, especially<br />
in an area as sensitive, emotive and controversial as sentencing, where I hope I have<br />
been able to inject some reason into the debate,” Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Freiberg said.<br />
“It is also pleasing to be recognised for my contribution to legal education in law and<br />
criminology. It has been a pleasure engaging with, and possibly influencing, young<br />
minds for over three decades at both <strong>Monash</strong> and the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Melbourne.”<br />
Gerber celebrated the launch <strong>of</strong> their<br />
books. The Honourable Michael Kirby AM<br />
CMG conducted the evening which was<br />
attended by 100 people.<br />
Constitutional Advancement<br />
in a Frozen Continent Essays<br />
in Honour <strong>of</strong> George Winterton<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor H P Lee (<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>University</strong>)<br />
and Dr Peter Gerangelos (<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Sydney) jointly edited ‘Constitutional<br />
Advancement in a Frozen Continent’ in<br />
honour <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor George Winterton<br />
who passed away on 6 November<br />
2008. The launch was presented by The<br />
Honourable Sir Anthony Mason, AC KBE<br />
on Wednesday 25 November at <strong>Monash</strong><br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Chambers with close to<br />
70 people attending.<br />
The faculty held a number <strong>of</strong> book<br />
launches throughout <strong>2009</strong> by staff from<br />
the Castan Centre for Human Rights <strong>Law</strong><br />
and the Centre for Regulatory Studies.<br />
These book launches are listed under the<br />
respective Centre reports.<br />
9.4 Media Involvement<br />
<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School gained substantial<br />
media coverage during <strong>2009</strong> with over 100<br />
press, radio and online stories featuring<br />
<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School staff. Staff were<br />
involved in a wide range <strong>of</strong> substantial law<br />
issues ranging from Euthanasia to Antimoney<br />
laundering legislation. The faculty<br />
also had the opportunity to celebrate one<br />
<strong>of</strong> its law alumna being appointed the<br />
<strong>2009</strong> Australian <strong>of</strong> the Year.<br />
The Age and The Australian covered a<br />
majority <strong>of</strong> media stories quoting <strong>Monash</strong><br />
<strong>Law</strong> School staff, followed by The Herald-<br />
Sun and ABC Radio.<br />
Dr Gideon Boas made several<br />
contributions to the The Age, ABC and<br />
The Australian regarding the Karadzic<br />
case and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arie Freiberg AM<br />
and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bernadette Mc Sherry<br />
commented on child sex <strong>of</strong>fenders.<br />
Other staff members who commented on<br />
various topics throughout <strong>2009</strong> included,<br />
but was not limited to Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Graeme<br />
Hodge, Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Adrian<br />
Evans, Dr Bronwyn Naylor, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ann<br />
Monotti and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Susan Kneebone.<br />
