11. Student Activities
11.1 Monash Law
Students’ Society
Founded in 1964, the Monash Law
Students’ Society is one of the largest
and most dynamic student organizations
within Monash University. Over the past
few years, and in particular in 2009, the
LSS has worked hard to strengthen and
maintain the previous year’s expansions.
In 2009 the LSS had just under two
thousand members. The LSS is proud of
its ongoing ability to enhance the student
experience within the Faculty of Law at
Monash and work with the Faculty to
ensure that Monash is producing the best
possible graduates.
The LSS is voluntarily staffed and
managed by 37 committee members.
This committee works hard to ensure that
a large range of events and services are
offered as a supplement to the formal
academic education provided through the
university. These include careers advice,
educational support, competitions and
social activities to provide both personal
and professional development.

The LSS has four main portfolios which
allow for a clear review of the society as
a whole.
Activities
The Activities portfolio offers a large
number of events for students at a
range of price points to help promote a
collegiate atmosphere amongst the law
student body. The LSS firmly believes
that the activities portfolio serves a
highly important function of ensuring
that students are integrated into their
degree. The LSS therefore runs numerous
activities throughout the year including
First Year Camp, O-Week, First Year
Dinner, BBQs, Intro Night, Pub Crawls,
Valedictory Dinner, River Cruise and Law
Ball.
The Peer Mentor Program is continuing
to be expanded to ensure all first years
are comfortable in the new environment
of law school. The LSS is very proud of
how this program has continued to grow
and how the LSS has been able to work
with the faculty to provide this invaluable
service.
Careers
The Careers portfolio aims to ensure that
all students are well informed as to the
many different careers paths available
to them and provides targeted services
to ensure that Monash graduates are
competitive in the job market.
The O week guide is produced to ensure
that all first years are given a broad
understanding of the many services
offered to them by the LSS, faculty and
university. This is then followed by a triyearly
magazine which includes interest
pieces across a broad range of topics,
written by law students.
The Careers Guide is fast becoming the
most valuable publication of the LSS.
This guide gives a broad overview as
to the process of applying for seasonal
clerkships, as well as firm profiles,
relevant articles about corporate life and
all the dates a student might need in
applications. The careers portfolio also
produces the Graduate Guide which
highlights the many other career paths
available.
