champion. Her team members included<br />

Damien Carrick presenter <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Law</strong><br />

<strong>Report</strong> on the ABC Radio National and<br />

Beth Wilson Victoria’s Health Services<br />

Commissioner.<br />

The negative team comprised <strong>of</strong><br />

team captain Barrister Shivani Pillai,<br />

David Galbally one <strong>of</strong> Melbourne most<br />

respected QC’s and Sally Cockburn, (aka<br />

Dr Feelgood) who presents on 3AW and<br />

Channel 7’s Morning Show.<br />

The President <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Monash</strong> Association<br />

<strong>of</strong> Debaters, Damien Bruckard, delivered<br />

the unanimous decision that the<br />

affirmative team won.<br />

9.2 Public Lectures<br />

17th Lucinda Lecture ‘Section<br />

92: markets, protectionism and<br />

proportionality – Australian and<br />

European perspectives’<br />

Convened by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor H P Lee, the 17th<br />

Lucinda Lecture was held at <strong>Monash</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Chambers on Thursday<br />

19 November. The Lucinda Lecture was<br />

presented by The Honourable Justice<br />

Susan Keifel <strong>of</strong> the High Court <strong>of</strong> Australia<br />

on the topic ‘Section 92: markets,<br />

protectionism and proportionality –<br />

Australian and European perspectives’.<br />

The topic was introduced by The<br />

Honourable Chief Justice Marilyn Warren<br />

who welcomed attendees and the patron<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Lucinda Lecture, The Honourable<br />

Sir Zelman Cowen AK, GCMG, GCVO,<br />

KStJ, QC. The lecture was attended by<br />

100 guests.<br />

Costello Lecture “It’s my body isn’t<br />

it” Children, medical treatment and<br />

human rights<br />

The <strong>2009</strong> Costello Lecture, which is<br />

devoted to issues <strong>of</strong> ethics and social<br />

justice, was held on Thursday 23 July at<br />

the BMW The Edge theatre in Federation<br />

Square. <strong>Monash</strong> alumna, Chief Justice <strong>of</strong><br />

the Family Court <strong>of</strong> Australia, Diana Bryant<br />

presented the <strong>2009</strong> lecture on the theme<br />

“It’s my body isn’t it” Children, medical<br />

treatment and human rights”. The Lecture<br />

was introduced by Patron Tim Costello, AO,<br />

Chief Executive <strong>of</strong> World Vision Australia,<br />

and had over 250 people in attendance.<br />

Dean’s Lecture Series<br />

A series <strong>of</strong> 5 lectures where held throughout<br />

the year on current legal issues from leading<br />

<strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> School academics and<br />

the <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>Law</strong> Students’ Society. The<br />

lectures were held at <strong>Monash</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>Law</strong> Chambers and presenters where<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Elizabeth Boros, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ian<br />

Freckelton, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Marilyn Pittard,<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Justin Malbon and Ms Catherine<br />

Lamble, Magistrate.<br />
