APEGBC members have the unique mandate in British
Columbia to practice professional engineering and geoscience.
How do we ensure that we will continue to have this privilege, as
well as our status to self-regulate?
Self-examination and reflection is crucial if we wish to be
seen to be actively regulating our professions in the interest of
the public at large. Being able to view ourselves with a critical
eye and to find room for improvement where it is warranted can
only support the public’s positive view of our professions.
Professional engineers and geoscientists are not only
technically competent, but are also ethical souls who genuinely
work to apply their expertise to benefit society. Even though
there may not be a specific problem to which we are responding,
we should take the initiative to examine ourselves and the way
we do things. It is precisely because we are driven to excellence,
as individuals and as professionals, that we ensure that
everything we do enables us to even better serve society.
This is the impetus behind our professional renewal initiative
that you will see described in this issue. I encourage you to take
part in the online survey. It touches on all the issues about which
members contact me—continuing professional development
(CPD), practice reviews, investigation and discipline, the role of
technologists, specialist designations and more.
We aim to manage ourselves even better. We protect the
public, and should be seen to be doing so.
