approach in relations with the UN system and other bodies.
Other intergovernmental bodies
IUCN has maintained close links with the Council of Europe and has
been involved in many of its working committees and meetings.
Links have also been maintained with the Organization of African
Unity, the Organization of American States and the International Bank
for Reconstruction and Development.
Active contacts have continued with the ICSU, Special Committee
for the International Biological Programme (SCIBP) and the Scientific
Committee on Problems of the Environment (SCOPE).
Other organizations
Liaison has been maintained with various international non-govern
mental organizations throughout the world having an interest in various
aspects of the environment.
Among them are the Commission Internationale pour la Protection
de la Region Alpine, the International Association on Water Pollution
Research, the Conseil International de la Chasse, the Fauna Preservation
Society, the International Federation of Landscape Architects, the
International Planned Parenthood Federation, the International Youth
Federation, and the Inter-Parliamentary Association.
Close links have also been maintained with many national institutions
and organizations including, in the United States of America, the
Council on Environmental Quality, the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and
Wildlife, and the National Park Service of the Department of the
Interior, the Conservation Foundation and the Smithsonian Institution;
and, in the United Kingdom, with the Nature Conservancy.
Conferences and meetings
IUCN sponsors and participates in a large number of meetings. These
constitute the forums where the statutory and normal business of the Union
is conducted, and where the work of conservation - in all its forms and
aspects - is planned, organized, and directed. Meetings serve a variety of
other useful purposes, principally providing opportunities for the exchange
of information, the development of ideas, and the promotion of wider
acceptance of the basic principles of good environmental management.
