President’s Report
Site of exchange is a theme that reflects this
year’s activities and one that is fundamental to
the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery’s mission of
Connecting people and ideas through art.
In 2009, we engaged a diverse range of stakeholders
in the development of the Gallery’s 2010 – 2014
Strategic Plan. Forty Gallery staff, board members,
volunteers, artists, partners and supporters
participated in a 3-day planning workshop in the
spring and a further day in the fall of 2009. We are
very grateful for this group’s insight and commitment
to the planning process. Their inspired discussion
about the Gallery’s future truly revealed KW|AG to
be a site of exchange.
As part of our planning process, we also evaluated our
facilities in Centre In The Square in light of our current
and future program needs. Facility improvement
planning will involve significant exchange of ideas
about our site as we look at how we can serve the
community in the most dynamic and exciting ways
through our programs and collaboration with Centre
In The Square and in the Civic District in which we
are situated.
KW|AG benefits from the contributions of many
outstanding people and organizations. Skilled
expertise and innovative ideas characterize the work
of the Gallery’s staff led by Alf Bogusky and senior
staff members Crystal Mowry, Caroline Oliver, Shelly
Mitchell and Agnieszka Chalas. Dedicated volunteers
contribute to the Gallery’s Board of Directors,
committees and programs. KW|AG receives
generous support from the Cities of Kitchener and
Waterloo, the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council,
The Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation,
the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and the Canadian
Arts and Heritage Sustainability Program. Their
support, combined with the generosity of members,
donors, and corporate sponsors makes KW|AG’s
programming possible. We are very grateful for
the enthusiasm, confidence and resources invested
in KW|AG by so many entities. My sincere thanks,
to each of you, for your role in making KW|AG an
exciting site of exchange.
DIRECTOR’S
REPORT
The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery is a resource
enabling people to build empathy, intellectual and
social capital through the exchange of ideas and experience.
We do this in a stimulating environment characterized
by openness, curiosity, respect, trust, tolerance
and supportive accommodation. At KW|AG, we
aim to connect people and ideas through art.
In 2009, we made every effort to be a site of
exchange, producing and showcasing 12 exhibitions
which featured 25 artists (14 from the KW region)
while touring Will Gorlitz’s nowhere if not here exhibition
nationally. Serving approximately 32 000 visitors
annually, it’s clear that this aim of the Gallery is
being well met.
Community partners of the past year include the
Visual Arts Alliance (Get Off on Art); CAFKA (Janice
Kerbel exhibition); Open Ears and the Art Gallery
of Ontario (Janet Cardiff installation); Macdonald
Stewart Art Centre (publication of Gorlitz project);
Perimeter Institute (Shirin Neshat and Janine
Antoni lectures); Goethe Institut and the Institut
für Auslandsbeziehungen (Building Berlin); the
Prosperity Council Task Force on Creative Enterprise;
Civic District Masterplan Committee; and the Alliance
for a Grand Community.
Other 2009 highlights include the appointment of a
new Curator of Exhibitions and Collections, Crystal
Mowry, whose personal mission and style are conso-
nant with these ideas. Her wealth of curatorial experience,
aligned with her passion as an artist, mean we
have a lot to look forward to in coming years. We also
launched a new web site whose design and content
were built around this theme of ideas exchange.
Two strategic planning sessions involved exchanging
ideas with invited key community members,
KW|AG’s staff, and Board of Directors to inform and
inspire KW|AG’s future direction.
I would like to express my gratitude to each member
of the Board, especially to Board President Judith
Stephens-Wells, who has provided excellent leadership
and guidance through our planning phase.
Thank you to KW|AG staff for their passion and innovative
exchange of ideas which keeps the Gallery’s
programming fresh and vibrant. Thank you also
to our donors, sponsors and Director’s Circle and
Curator’s Circle members, whose generous support
is essential to our success.
CURATORIAL
REPORT
KW|AG’s curatorial programming always begins as a
conversation or exchange of ideas. These conversations
begin just about anywhere (the gallery spaces,
outside, virtually) and with just about anyone (our
colleagues, artists, families, visitors). The most
rewarding conversations are the ones that evolve
from serendipitous beginnings into projects that
inspire engagement from a wider audience.
Exchange is a sequence: In May 2009, KW|AG’s
Curatorial and Collections Consultant of 7 years,
Allan MacKay, left the Gallery to pursue his own
artistic processes. I was fortunate to have assisted
Allan for four years before assuming the position of
Curator of Collections and Exhibitions. As a mentor,
Allan taught me to leave room for the unexpected;
in essence, to leave room for someone or something
else to contribute to our conversations. Under his
direction, curatorial activity championed the idea of
stories that unfold over time. In 2009, artists Susan
Coolen and Andrew Wright contributed the 6th and
7th instalments of our Parochial Views series of
commissions. These works join the Gallery’s permanent
collection for future generations to contemplate
and enjoy.
Exchange is a dialogue: 2009 was particularly rich for
exhibitions that shone a light on how a shared locale
informs our sense of identity, collective memory and
sense of agency. New projects under the aegis of our
River Grand Chronicles series explored communication
within our regional landscape. Whether assuming
the role of collector and interpreter of individual
narratives (Phil Irish) or crafting a taxonomy
equivalent to an alphabet (Susan Coolen), a desire
to connect and communicate is always a part of the
artist’s role. Part of our role as curatorial staff is to
cultivate and highlight the kind of dialogue that can
happen between individual artworks. Our 2009 exhibition
program included several group exhibitions
that addressed site as its curatorial thesis. Some Kind
of Wonderful: The 4th KW|AG Biennial, guest curated
by Nancy Campbell, assembled work by 11 regional
artists transforming our main gallery into a site of
wonder. ANTHEM: Perspectives on Home and Native
Land, circulated by Carleton University Art Gallery,
Ottawa explored diverse forms of nationhood that
make the concept of national accord complex.
Exchange is an action: 2009 was an exceptional year
for bringing the world to our region. Bringing together
11 Berlin-based artists from around the world,
Building Berlin focused on individual artists who
have helped cultivate the German capital’s dynamic
art scene. Our Art Talks, presented in partnership
with the Perimeter Institute, continued to bring
international artists to the region, with Janine Antoni
and Shirin Neshat presenting their work followed by
interviews with Robert Enright in Border Crossings.
2009 also marked a shift in how we involved the
community in meaningful conversations via art.
KW|AG partnered with Wilfrid Laurier University’s
Community Service Learning students for an interactive
project engaging the public in conversation
about the Gallery’s exhibitions. Look for more information
on how this partnership unfolded in next
year’s Annual Report. Other conversations with
exhibiting artists were captured in interviews posted
on our web site and in our exhibition catalogues.
Exchange is putting one thing in the place of another:
To be a site of exchange is to recognize that partnerships
amplify and extend the boundaries of our artistic
programming. nowhere if not here, a survey exhibition
of work by Guelph-based artist Will Gorlitz,
opened in fall 2008 and travelled to the Art Gallery
of Nova Scotia and Macdonald Stewart Art Centre
(Guelph). The importance of Will’s work resonates in
the comprehensive exhibition catalogue, published
in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University Press.
KW|AG’s partnerships with arts organizations such as
CAFKA and Open Ears were celebrated in exhibitions
of work by Janice Kerbel and Janet Cardiff (on loan
from the Art Gallery of Ontario), each programmed
in conversation with the themes of these biennial
events.
Wild Things: A Bestiary Assembled From KW|AG’s Permanent Collection
Curated by Crystal Mowry and Cindy Wayvon (KW|AG)
Through domestication, scientific study, and even anthropomorphic efforts, we feel we understand
animals; yet, the unique reality of the animal experience still remains outside of our knowledge. Selected
works used hybrid animal/human imagery, explorations of animal physiognomy and absence to suggest
the unknown that permeates our relationship with all living creatures.
ANTHEM: Perspectives on Home and Native Land featured the work of artists from across Canada who
identified varying forms of nationhood that serve or detract from the concept of a national accord. Artists
from various backgrounds – Aboriginal, Métis, White (Anglophone and Francophone), and African-
Canadian – consult their personal and communal selves to address forms of sovereignty that they express
responsively as their anthem.
Janet Cardiff: Whispering Room
Co-presented by the Open Ears Festival, Courtesy of the Art Gallery of Ontario
As part of the 2009 Open Ears Festival of Music and Sound, KW|AG was pleased to host an installation
by Janet Cardiff. Whispering Room was a multimedia installation featuring sixteen speakers, each playing
dialogue by a female describing a particular event from various viewpoints. As listeners moved through
the gallery space, the story they heard changed. Each segment gently pulled the listener in a different
direction, shuffling them between the past and the future and implicating the psychology of different
modes of communication. The hushed voices were interrupted by a brief film projection of a girl tap
dancing in the forest. This seemingly random interruption was both mysterious and familiar, a fitting
analogy for the haunting voice that moved throughout a forest of speakers in the Gallery space.
Phil Irish: Watershed River Grand Chronicles #6
Elora based Phil Irish premiered a new series of paintings which explored turning points in people’s lives in relation
to their experiences along the Grand River. Irish incorporated hand-drawn maps created by a diverse group
of people, and visited and documented the physical sites described by the maps. During this process, he sometimes
noticed a discrepancy between his experience and the hand-drawn maps of his collaborators. These differing
points of view were manifest in a collision between representation and abstraction within a single work.
Susan Coolen: Grand Shadows River Grand Chronicles #7
This multimedia installation combined photographic light works, image projections and video works incorporating
imagery drawn from Coolen’s on-going expeditions to the Grand River during the four seasons. Much of
Coolen’s work begins with the act of collecting (and sometimes mummifying) specimens, found objects, flotsam
and other detritus of daily life. As an initial means of responding to these items, Coolen turned to her interests in
natural history, the museum and astronomy, and their links to the history of photography.
Catherine Paleczny: Sumus Quod Sumus
Though her practice is rooted in ceramics, Paleczny’s work often suggests the archeological remnants of past
civilizations, swarms and flocks of organisms. Using traditional hand-building techniques, Paleczny crafted each
object as an individual form before integrating them into a collective. The swarms in Sumus Quod Sumus spoke of
movement, repetition, spatial tension, and our constant search for order and belonging in the world around us.
Ann Marie Hadcock, Shane Krepakavich, Gareth Lichty, Eileen MacArthur, Janet Morton,
and Ehryn Torrell. Curated by Nancy Campbell. Presented in co-operation with the Kitchener-
Waterloo Society of Artists
This celebration of our region’s artists alluded to the idea that there can be many kinds of wonderful.
Wonder can refer to a sublime, awe-inspiring quality of beauty, and it can refer to an active inquiry. From
woven garden hose, to fibre bonfires, to a recreation of a chapel floor from memory, the works in this
exhibition challenged pre-conceived notions of materiality and presentation, while asking us to reinvent
what and how we see.
Claude Tousignant: In Perpetuity
This intimately scaled exhibition featured four works by Tousignant from KW|AG’s own collection.
Identifiable for his strategic use of hard edge processes and minimalist elegance, Tousignant’s experiments
with colour and shape eschew spontaneity in favour of geometric precision. His recognizable
“target” or “gong” paintings of concentric rings on circular canvases, later followed by his monochromes,
are among the most dynamic and persistent images in modern Canadian art.
Pia Fuchs (German ID of Patricia Reed), Ingo Gerken, Thom Kubli, Lars Ramberg,
Karin Sander, and Daniel Seiple. Curated by Germaine Koh.
Building Berlin merged KW|AG’s interest in local and global activity in contemporary art. The exhibition
featured the work of artists, all based in Berlin, who were chosen to participate in the exhibition because
of their involvement in shaping the city’s current art scene. The exhibition featured painting, new media,
sculpture, and installation. The exhibition also included Tear Down This Fence, a participatory project,
conceived by Daniel Seiple, which brought together the border residents of Kitchener and Waterloo.
Janice Kerbel
Singularly Significant series in concert with CAFKA, Contemporary Art Forum | Kitchener & Area
As a complement to CAFKA’s 2009 theme of Veracity, KW|AG was pleased to present the work of UK-based
Canadian artist Janice Kerbel. Kerbel’s exhibition included Remarkable, a series of prints reminiscent
of fairground posters that announced the spectacular feats of improbable beings. Also included was
Underwood, a series of four fictional love letters, one for each season, rendered in a typeface designed
to mimic a faulty typewriter.

Being Magnified: Heroes and Villains from KW|AG’s Permanent Collection
Curated by Cindy Wayvon, KW|AG
Featuring works from KW|AG’s permanent collection, Being Magnified took the visitor through a “Hero’s
Journey”, where each artwork explored a stage of self-exploration, growth, or triumph. Through select
paintings, prints and drawings, the exhibition delineated the path to heroism or self-actualization, magnifying
moments of curiosity, struggle, and strength all in pursuit of an empowered existence.
Sun Life Financial Art Talks:
In 2005, KW|AG and the Perimeter Institute formed a
partnership to bring cutting edge visual art presentations
by distinguished artists and cultural figures to
Waterloo Region. The commitment to the world of
ideas shared by both institutions, and the desire to
see art as part of the constellation of contemporary
discussion was the basis for this new partnership.
Each presentation was hosted by Robert Enright in
a lecture and interview format. Enright has a distinguished
career as a writer, University of Guelph
Professor, and Senior Contributing Editor of Border
Crossings magazine.
Shirin Neshat, January 21
Shirin Neshat, the Iranian-born photographer and
filmmaker, shared her hypnotic visual allegories of
exile, power and violence before treating the audience
to a preview of scenes from her latest film titled
Women without Men.
Janine Antoni, May 13
Permanent Collection Report
PERMANENT
COLLECTION
REPORT
The permanent collection was a focal point for
exchange in 2009. The art storage vaults were
opened to Fine Arts students from the University of
Waterloo, allowing them to examine diverse techniques
and media, and gain a better understanding
of why artwork is collected. Quite different from a
curated exhibition, the purely coincidental placement
of artwork in the vaults results in random
juxtapositions and unexpected relationships among
the works. This randomness provides an opportunity
for students to engage in the artwork in a unique
context.
Animation of the collection was also taken in a
new direction through the initiative of local artists.
Mary Catherine Newcomb and Isabella Stefanescu
developed a whimsical project called ‘The KW|AG
Art Nuns’, a parody of BBC’s Sister Wendy Beckett.
Dressed as nuns, they created short videos providing
witty commentary and interpretation for various
historical works. Tarin Hughes, a recent graduate
of the UW’s Fine Arts program and KW|AG docent,
utilized the collection to develop an online exhibition
for the AGO’s Collection X website, a site designed
for encouraging exchange between community
members and arts organizations. Stay tuned for links
to the Art Nun videos and Tarin’s Collection X project
on our website in 2010.
The corridor exhibition, Being Magnified: Heroes
and Villains from KW|AG’s Permanent Collection,
was curated with narrative in mind, using artwork
to illustrate the fundamental structure of storytelling.
Local conservator Jesse-Alan MacDonald volunteered
his services to restore Walter Bachinski’s Fury
sculpture. Gallery visitors may have noted a steady
improvement to the condition of the sculpture as
Jesse’s treatments were completed. After consulting
the artist, rust was removed, plaster chips were
filled in, and paint loss was restored, returning the
sculpture to its original condition.
Two photographs were accessioned into the collection
this year, keeping with our intention of collecting
modestly until storage expansion is possible. Shelley
Niro’s River Spirit and Return to Life were created for
the frontispiece exhibition River Grand Chronicles in
2004. They were taken at the edge of the Six Nations
Reserve and reflect the artist’s relationship with the
river as a place of solitude and strength. After a five
year moratorium, these works along with 6 acquisitions
from late 2008, were on display during an open
house celebrating KW|AG’s return to collecting.
PUBLIC PROGRAMS &
EDUCATION REPORT
Public Programs & Education Report
The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery embraces lifelong
learning. We seek to connect to as broad an
audience as possible through first-class programs
designed to engage new and existing audiences with
contemporary art, ideas, and visual culture in relevant
and enriching ways.
In 2009, the Public Programs and Education
Department enhanced existing programs in significant
ways and laid the groundwork for a number of
new programming initiatives with particular emphasis
on community engagement and a commitment to
diversity.
School-Based Programs
Think Art
Think Art, our series of art appreciation workshops,
uses critical thinking activities to enrich students’
understanding of art and create connections to
other subject areas. Workshops prepare students for
a visit to the gallery and are available for grades K-2,
3-4, 5-6, and 7-8. Based on the popularity of Think
Art, we plan to launch three new workshops in early
2010 to reflect every grade at the elementary level.
Teacher Kit Workshops
and Evenings for Educators
Launched in 2007 and using artwork from KW|AG’s
permanent collection, these workshops offer information
on artists and artworks, discussion questions
for the classroom, and hands-on artmaking sessions
using simple materials available at all schools.
With resource links, extension ideas, and curriculum
connections, these workshops are a popular
program for local teachers. This year’s workshops
included introductory sessions on illustration and
pastel techniques.
Expressions 34: A Celebration of
Student Art from Waterloo Region
and Re-mix
Expressions 34 celebrated the artistic achievements
of young people in our community and considered
the themes of House + Home, Flora + Fauna, You + Me
and Bits + Bites, encouraging discussions about identity,
home, memories, society and the environment.
Student artwork was exhibited alongside professional
artists’ work from KW|AG’s permanent collection
to illustrate common interests and perspectives
within each theme. Interpretive activities further
engaged children in deepening their understandings
of the themes presented and encouraged them
to make connections to their own work and that of
their peers.
Re-mix 2009 featured artwork by students who
participated in Tour and Studio workshops during
the winter 2009 exhibition season. Responding to
the themes presented in ANTHEM: Perspectives on
Home and Native land, students created personalized
flags that explored cultural identity and the
complexities inherent in defining a nation.
Education Gallery
This year, we launched an education gallery in the
downstairs corridor outside the entrance of the
studio to serve as a teaching resource for artisteducators
during studio-based programs. The
gallery features 20 artworks from the permanent
collection selected to showcase exemplary skill in
drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture and
includes artists such as Stanley Lewis, Jane Buyers,
and Elizabeth Eastman.
Public Programs
Adult Workshops
Launched in 2008, Adult Workshops are ideal for
those interested in trying new techniques and media.
These 3 hour sessions are taught by leading regional
artists and include art supplies. Workshops this year
included Oil Painting, Glass Fusing, Electro-Etching,
Papermaking, Encaustic Painting, and Letters Text
and Type. Based on their success, we plan to double
the number of adult workshops we are offering in
2010.
KWS Partnership and afterpARTy
This year we partnered with the Kitchener-Waterloo
Symphony to provide programming events related
to both the Signature and Family Concert series.
Pre-registered KWS Family Concert attendees were
invited to drop in to the Gallery to participate in
artmaking activities related to concert themes.
KWS Signature concert goers were invited to join
Conductor Edwin Outwater and KWS musicians for
two afterpARTy events at KW|AG where they enjoyed
a tour and reception following the concert.
Future Direction
Going forward, we will endeavour to raise the
profile and activities of the Education Department
by increasing our use of technology to engage visitors
and promoting effective educational collaborations
and partnerships both within and beyond the
Gallery.
DEVELOPMENT &
MARKETING REPORT
Development & Marketing Report
A key milestone in 2009 was the launch of a new
Gallery website with greater functionality and a
dramatic new design focusing on KW|AG as a site of
exchange for ideas. New content and videos provide
insight into our exhibitions. Feedback forms and
surveys create opportunities for the further exchange
of ideas. Several extranet sites also provide forums
for sharing information with Board members, staff,
key donors and volunteers.
Online registrations are now handled very efficiently,
and an online donations module links directly
to a new database, making it easier for patrons to
support their local Gallery. At the same time, the
system helps streamline the Gallery’s administrative
processes.
A long-time goal of improving visitor amenities
at KW|AG was realized in 2009 with the development
of the HUB, our new community lounge. The
HUB includes comfortable seating, a flat screen
video monitor, reading materials and two computers
that provide access to the permanent collection
database. The collection is a treasured community
resource and KW|AG is pleased to share it with the
community. The Gallery is especially grateful to The
Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation’s
Community Fund, The Erb & Good Family Funeral
Home Community Fund held at The Kitchener and
Waterloo Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of
Kitchener-Conestoga, the Rotary Club of Waterloo,
the Rotary Club of Kitchener, the Lion’s Club of
Kitchener, and the J.P. Bickell Foundation for making
the HUB project possible.
This year’s Black & Gold Gala, held on October 22 at
the Holiday Inn in Kitchener, was expertly chaired by
volunteer extraordinaire Sharon Morton. This signature
event has become a site of exchange and a lively
social event. Proceeds in 2009 exceeded budget
and expectations by netting $60,045 in support of
Gallery programming and operations.
A new partnership with Beechwood Travel and Cruise
led to the renewal of a once-thriving KW|AG activity:
art tours. In July, an enthusiastic group of art lovers
traveled to Chicago to visit celebrated art treasures.
The success of this fundraising venture has led to
planning for additional tours in the future. Special
thanks to Tony Lewis are extended for his leadership
on this project.
Curator’s Circle and Director’s Circle members are
offered enriched opportunities for exchanging
ideas through special events. In 2009, they had an
opportunity to hear Allan Harding MacKay, (March
12); exhibiting artists Susan Coolen, Phil Irish and
Catherine Paleczny (May 27); and Germaine Koh
(September 16). The year concluded with a discussion
by filmmaker Gail Singer (November 25).
Development staff worked with the Offord Group to
develop a planned gifts program in preparation for
the launch of a new campaign. New Dimensions in
Art outlines the Gallery’s aspirations for the future,
driven by a vision of KW|AG as a source for ideas and
creativity at the individual, group and community
level.
Making art accessible is one of our operating principles,
so it was with particular pleasure that we
welcomed Sun Life Financial as the Gallery’s Free
Admissions Sponsor for the 2009-2010 season.
Thanks to their support, there are no financial
impediments that might prevent members of our
community from making art a part of their lives.
TREASURER’S
REPORT
Many partners support the significant and varied
activities of KW|AG. The cities of Kitchener and
Waterloo provide the core funding so necessary for
the Gallery’s operations. In 2009, approximately 26%
of revenue came from these two municipalities. Arts
organizations, such as the Ontario Arts Council and
the Canada Council for the Arts, also provide significant
funding so necessary to our operations.
KW|AG also relies heavily on support from the local
community. Like many individuals and organizations
in our community, the Gallery has been impacted
by the economic downturn. In 2009, we received
over $380,000 of funding from individuals, foundations
and corporations. This amount is less than was
received in previous years resulting in the Gallery
incurring a deficit, before accounting for bequests of
$54,728.
In 2009, KW|AG received a significant bequest from
the Estate of Paul Valentine Schnarr. This gift was
a vital contribution to the Gallery at a time when
the funding was most needed. The community
will benefit from this bequest for years to come.
The bequest strengthened our balance sheet at
December 31, 2009 as our unrestricted deficit was
reduced to $101,700. The cash on hand of $169,560
at December 31, 2009 is comprised primarily of
program funding received in advance.
The KW|AG Endowment Fund is an important part
of the long-term financial plan of the organization
and our goal of secure and consistent funding of
operations. Our locally managed endowment fund
provides significant memorial and remembrance
tributes, and we also participate in the Ontario Arts
Foundation matching grants program.
In 2009, the market value of our locally managed
endowment fund increased by more than $50,000
to $430,543.
KW|AG is committed to ensuring a financially secure
future, but it must receive strong financial support
from all of its partners, the cities of Kitchener and
Waterloo, arts agencies, individuals, corporations
and foundations. Each funding source is critical for
KW|AG to continue its exciting work which is so
important to our community.
“As Director General, it is my privilege to lead this organization.
I wish to acknowledge KW|AG’s Management
Team, who report to me directly, and who in turn, will
acknowledge the great work of their teams.
Shelly Mitchell, Manager of Finance and Administration,
is called upon to handle multiple, often unanticipated,
diverse projects and she does so with such dedication.
She oversaw the renovation and settling of an estate
gift involving a number of willing staff, volunteers and
contractors resulting in cost savings. Her efforts, while
always amazing, went into new realms this past year.
I wish to thank Crystal Mowry who assumed leadership
of our Curatorial and Collections program and Allan
MacKay, past Curatorial and Collections Consultant, who
is now pursuing his art full-time. Thank you for a rich
and vibrant exhibition program that has attracted attention
and support. I look forward to its continuance with
Crystal at the helm.
Tasha Ethelston, Director of Public Programs and
Education, furthered her education toward a Masters
Degree in Communications Studies at Laurier. KW|AG
will be even richer as a result of her enhanced knowledge
when she returns. We have been very fortunate to have
Agnieszka Chalas join us in the interim. Agnieszka has
provided exemplary leadership to her dedicated team.
We are so fortunate to have Caroline Oliver to lead our
Marketing and Development initiatives. Her vision and
leadership have contributed to the Gallery’s public image
and profile, enabling us to tell our stories to varied audiences,
resulting in increased involvement and support.
I am amazed at the breadth of her knowledge and the
depth of her energy and commitment.
Thank you all! – Alf Bogusky
“In the Curatorial department, conversation is essential
to how we work together, and in many cases, why we
work together. I am so fortunate to have colleagues who
bring curiosity, intelligence, individuality and dedication
to their roles. These essential ingredients, along with a
measure of good humour, are why we look for challenges
and thrive on risk. Curatorial and Collections Consultant,
Allan MacKay, has been a subtle and powerful influence
on our team and the KW community. His unassuming
wisdom and generosity set a high standard to follow
when it comes to how we treat each other and the artists
with which we work. I am so thankful for the opportunity
to have worked with him over the past few years.
Special thanks go to Curatorial Assistant / Registrar Cindy
Wayvon for her efficient grant writing, administrative and
technical support, her thoughtful approach to providing
a context for our collection in contemporary exhibitions;
Curatorial Assistant Barb Hobot for her insight, research
skills, and enthusiasm for expanding our arsenal of collaborators;
Preparator Amy Roger for her skill, good nature,
and selflessness when it is most needed; and the many
volunteers and casual staff whose generosity we greatly
appreciate. Thanks also to our KW|AG colleagues who,
through their myriad ways, promote the value of visual
arts to our region. Finally, special thanks to the collaborating
artists and gallery visitors who have kept the
conversation about ideas on-going.” – Crystal Mowry
“An ambitious program schedule, such as ours, requires
a great deal of collaboration to plan and deliver. I
would particularly like to thank Alex Krueger, Public
Programs Coordinator; Cristin Osborne School Programs
Coordinator; Steve Lavigne, Mindy Alexander, Tarin
Hughes and Karoline Varin-Jarkowsky, Artist Educators;
in addition to our team of dedicated Docents for their
contributions to the success of KW|AG’s educational
programming in 2009.” – Agnieszka Chalas
“The Development and Marketing team is a dynamic
group of wonderfully dedicated professionals who
garner support for and interest in the Gallery by building
a relationship with and engaging the community.
Thank you to these team members, each of whom does
fabulous work, provides wonderful service, and is a
delightful peer to be associated with:
Matt Dupuis, who works at a blistering pace to create
dynamic new print materials and videos, and take great
pictures to help tell the Gallery story; Eleanor Mueller,
who nurtures strong connections with donors and sponsors,
and keeps the cycle of events and activities flowing
smoothly; Stephen Radbourn, who keeps our data up-todate,
our communications current and greets our guests
with a warm enthusiasm; and Tracy Smith, who has boldly
moved the Gallery into exciting new directions with an
outstanding website, and inventive e-communications
and social media initiatives.
Thanks are also extended to the Canadian Arts and
Heritage Sustainability Program and to eSolutionsGroup,
KW|AG’s online marketing and business solutions provider,
for their support of the website project. A special note
of thanks (and gold stars) goes to Karen Mayfield and the
terrific team at eSolutionsGroup.
I would also like to express my appreciation to Robin
Fowler from the Offord Group for her wisdom, insight
and advice on the Gallery’s Major Gifts/Planned Giving
program. – Caroline Oliver
"KW|AG was open 362 days in 2009 with 31,085 visitors/participants
who were greeted by our front desk
staff. KW|AG's Visitor Services Assistant and Gallery
Attendants are the first faces that Gallery visitors see.
I want to thank each member of the front desk team
for your dedication in representing KW|AG on the front
lines. Thank you to Meghan Schnarr, Crystal Ellis, Visitor
Services Assistants; and Mindy Alexander, Ketri Grise,
Sarah Kernohan, and Terrina Reitzel, for welcoming visitors
so warmly, answering general inquires and handling
our registrations." – Shelly Mitchell
