Jurisdictional AreaThe Florida Keys are a chain of islands extending southand west from the southern tip of Florida. From the<strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong> line at the 112 mile marker of HighwayU.S. One (including State Road 905 and a portion ofCard Sound Road) to the island of Key West at the fivemile marker of the same highway, the <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong>Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong> is the primary law enforcement agencyproviding service to the citizens of the <strong>County</strong>. Theagency also is charged with operating <strong>County</strong> detentionfacilities and serving civil papers in the entire <strong>County</strong>.The Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong> has its main Headquarters building,and it’s main Detention Center just outside of Key Weston Stock Island. The <strong>County</strong> is broken up into Districts,including the Lower Keys (District One), the MiddleKeys (Districts Four and Five), Islamorada (District Six)and the Upper Keys (District Seven).While the Sheriff’s <strong>Office</strong> is the primary law enforcementagency for <strong>Monroe</strong> <strong>County</strong>, other local, state andfederal agencies also operate in the Florida Keys. TheFlorida Highway Patrol investigates most accidents onKeys roadways. The Florida Fish and WildlifeCommission takes care of most waterborne law enforcementactivities. The Naval Air Station, located in theLower Keys, has its own security force. The City of KeyWest has its own police force, as does the City of KeyColony Beach.
