General
The Calvados arm of VTNI dates from 1945, when Jean Duclos began coach operations at Caen in the aftermath
of World War 2. On his retirement in 1983, a limited company was formed to continue the business, SATAD
(Société Anonyme des Transports Autocars Duclos). However, most vehicles seen in the 1980s continued to
carry Duclos names, with only a few having SATAD lettering. Duclos/SATAD was latterly based at rue de
Falaise, Caen.
SATAD purchased two other operators, Patry of Putot-en-Auge and Fournier, Cabourg, before selling out to the
Verney group in December 1991, by which time 55 vehicles were owned. Vehicles seen in Caen in 1992
continued to carry Duclos names and livery, but by mid-1993 the ADC (Autocars du Calvados) name and Verney
livery had appeared. In the mid-1990s, the rue de Falaise premises were vacated and the company moved to
Giberville. In 1998, the business of Chemin, Le Breuil-en-Auge was purchased.
The acquisition of the Verney group by Connex seems not to have resulted in any visible changes, but by 2007,
after Connex changed its name to Veolia, an all-over while livery and the Veolia name were introduced, as was
the VTNI identity which is becoming standard for all the interurban companies in Normandy. The Calvados arm
operates from Giberville and Le Breuil-en-Auge.
The ex-SATAD vehicles were numbered into the national Verney series, and this was continued into Connex
days, with vehicles transferred between other Verney fleets from time to time. A revised numbering scheme has
been introduced for new purchases, though existing vehicles have retained their Verney numbers.
