General<br />

<strong>The</strong> Calvados arm of VTNI dates from 1945, when Jean Duclos began coach operations at Caen in the aftermath<br />

of World War 2. On his retirement in 1983, a limited company was formed to continue the business, SATAD<br />

(Société Anonyme des Transports Autocars Duclos). However, most vehicles seen in the 1980s continued to<br />

carry Duclos names, with only a few having SATAD lettering. Duclos/SATAD was latterly based at rue de<br />

Falaise, Caen.<br />

SATAD purchased two other operators, Patry of Putot-en-Auge and Fournier, Cabourg, before selling out to the<br />

Verney group in December 1991, by which time 55 vehicles were owned. Vehicles seen in Caen in 1992<br />

continued to carry Duclos names and livery, but by mid-1993 the ADC (Autocars du Calvados) name and Verney<br />

livery had appeared. In the mid-1990s, the rue de Falaise premises were vacated and the company moved to<br />

Giberville. In 1998, the business of Chemin, Le Breuil-en-Auge was purchased.<br />

<strong>The</strong> acquisition of the Verney group by Connex seems not to have resulted in any visible changes, but by 2007,<br />

after Connex changed its name to Veolia, an all-over while livery and the Veolia name were introduced, as was<br />

the VTNI identity which is becoming standard for all the interurban companies in Normandy. <strong>The</strong> Calvados arm<br />

operates from Giberville and Le Breuil-en-Auge.<br />

<strong>The</strong> ex-SATAD vehicles were numbered into the national Verney series, and this was continued into Connex<br />

days, with vehicles transferred between other Verney fleets from time to time. A revised numbering scheme has<br />

been introduced for new purchases, though existing vehicles have retained their Verney numbers.<br />
